2014 Pocono: Clint Bowyer NASCAR Truck Race Recap

Townley was injured in ARCA Racing qualifying at Pocono Raceway Friday afternoon and was treated and released from a local hospital. As a precautionary measure, Townley was not cleared to race in this weekend’s event. Clint Bowyer was tapped to drive the No. 05 Athenian Motorsports entry instead.

Bowyer put the race truck in the 10th-place position on the starting grid for the 60 lap, 150 mile race and led the Camping World Truck Series race from lap 34 to lap 39 and again on lap 48 to 52 on the 2.5-mile triangle shaped race track.

Two consecutive cautions occurred late in the Pocono Mountains 150 giving the Zaxby’s team hope to get Bowyer in victory lane. Unfortunately, on the green/flag/checkered restart Bowyer was shuffled back to a fourth place finish for the No. 05 Athenian Motorsports team.
(On the final restart) “He (Austin Dillon) had a good partner there,” Clint Bowyer said. “It was a good push. The restart before that I was like, ‘Alright, well maybe I could still keep it a game here.’ But, honestly we were a third-place truck. Kyle Larson had everybody and when he blew his engine up that gave Austin (Dillon) and I an opportunity at it. We tried. It was a lot of fun. The Zaxby’s Toyota was pretty strong. Just to be able to jump in and give it a shot I think we all did a pretty good job. I had a lot of fun. These trucks are so much fun to drive, but maybe we’ll get another shot at it someday.”

John Wes Townley will be medically reevaluated this week and plans on being back behind the wheel of the No. 05 Zaxby's Athenian Motorsports Toyota Tundra on August 16, 2014 at Michigan International Speedway.
