2014 NHRA: Matt Hagan NHRA Northwest Nationals Event Recap: Semifinals

Although NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing's annual Western Swing didn't produce a Wally trophy for driver Matt Hagan, it produced confidence in his Mopar team.

Matt and the 426 Race HEMI 50th Anniversary Tribute Mopar Funny Car earned a semifinal finish at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

It was the second consecutive semifinal finish for Matt and the fourth of the season.

"Another semifinals finish, that's two in a row so the car is starting to run well," Matt said. "It just may take a race or two to really get in the groove of things and start going to the final and winning races."

The summertime heat that was over 85 degrees on Sunday afternoon plagued crew chief Dickie Venables in the semifinal.

"It just got really hot out here and we had to back it down," Matt said. "Gary (Densham) had a great car, he's been going down the racetrack today. It was basically a dead heat, but he got the win light.

"You definitely want to have your A game together and have everything come together nicely this time of year but this is drag racing and anything can happen. I'm pretty happy with the weekend."

The Mopar team will travel back to Don Schumacher Racing headquarters near Indianapolis before NHRA Mello Yello series competition resumes in two weeks in Brainerd, Minn.

Only two races remain before the Funny Car standings are reset for the six-race Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Matt is ranked seventh but is only 40 points (two wins in eliminations) out of third place.
