Walker Looks To Make History In Philadelphia

When the Bassmaster Elite Series heads to Philadelphia this weekend, pro angler David Walker will be in unfamiliar waters during the Bassmaster Elite event, Aug. 7-10, at Delaware River.

Even though Walker is a veteran Elite angler, he has never fished in Delaware River before in his career. The Cabela's/GEICO For Your Boat pro is using valuable practice time this week to continue his preparation for this weekend's tournament.

"It's definitely a big city tournament, that's for sure," Walker said. "It's kind of what I thought it was going to be; it's a very industrial-looking event. There's a lot of large ships, shipyards, and factories in the area. It's very unlike what you would picture an area to catch bass in, and so far it's shaping up to be hard to catch bass as well.

"That being said, I'm sure there's an area where there is a large amount of fish to be found, and that will be the key. Many times we go to tournaments and it's about fishing a pattern. I think here it's going to be more about needing to be in the right area and sticking with it. I'm going to find an area that has some fish in it and stay there because I don't think there are as many fish to be had this weekend as we're accustomed to."

Walker will look to move up the Angler of the Year standings this weekend when he launches from Frankford Arsenal Boat at 6:15 a.m. each day and weighs in at 3:15 p.m. at Great Plaza-Penn's Landing.

"I don't know what the ideal bag is going to be this weekend," Walker said. "That's what is unique about going to places you don't have any history at. Fishing at Lake Champlain last week was 15 pounds a day to make the cut and 19 pounds to get a check; that's consistency. I come to the Delaware River this week and I have no idea what I need. I don't know if I'm trying to catch a larger fish or if I'm trying to catch three-pounders. That's going to be the puzzle I try solve throughout practice and the tournament.

"After seeing this place, I would imagine that it probably doesn't have a large fish population. I'm going to need to be consistent in the fact that I need to catch fish every day. That will really be a big player in my opinion."
