2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA at Seattle

Brandon Huhtala finally closed the deal.

Huhtala won his first National Hot Rod Association national event when he took the trophy in Competition Eliminator at the O’Reilly Auto Parts Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways. He was one of six drivers to win on Goodyear tires, the best total among tiremakers.

The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series professional categories saw Doug Kalitta win in Top Fuel, John Force expand his NHRA career win record in Funny Car and Jason Line win in Pro Stock. In the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for sportsman racers, where teams choose between competing tire manufacturers, Joey Severance, Doug Gordon, Terry Anderson and Huhtala all won on Goodyear tires.

Huhtala was racing in the final round of a national event for the third time, but the victory was his first.

Severance, in Top Alcohol Dragster, and Gordon, in Top Alcohol Funny Car, gave Goodyear a sweep in the Alcohol categories for the fastest and most powerful sportsman cars in the NHRA.

Anderson’s win came in Super Stock. It was his second national event victory.

Kalitta beat Antron Brown in the Top Fuel final in a race between the category’s points leaders. Kalitta won for the 35th time in his career, drawing him even with Don Garlits on the all-time win list.

Kalitta, Brown, Shawn Langdon and Tony Schumacher have clinched sports in the NHRA’s Countdown to a Championship, drag racing’s post season title system.

Force beat longtime friend and former teammate Gary Densham in the final round. It was Force’s 141st career victory. Only points leader Robert Hight and Force have clinched Funny Car berths in the Countdown.

Line beat teammate Greg Anderson in the Pro Stock final. It was close; the margin of victory was a razor-thin .0023 of a second, or about nine inches.

Erica Enders-Stevens, Allen Johnson, Line, Jeg Coughlin, Dave Connolly, Shane Gray and Vincent Nobile have earned Pro Stock positions in the Countdown.

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
