Balancing Act. Porsche 911 RSR receives adjustments for Road America

After winning the two opening rounds of the 2014 Tudor Championship at Daytona and Sebring – both low-downforce, high-speed tracks – the Porsche 911 RSR has struggled to stay competitive on the four tracks which followed on the calendar. All four tracks demanded high-downforce setups. The car performed well again at the most recent round, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is a high-speed layout that rewards low-downforce setups.

IMSA, the rule-making body of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, uses an ongoing series of well researched and thought out “Adjustments of Performance” (AoP) adjustments to maintain parody between each car in each class. The objective of these modifications to the original homologation of each car is to try and ensure close and competitive racing where no brand has a distinct upper hand.

In an effort to balance the rear-engine sportscar icon with the mid- and front-engine cars of the other manufacturers in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class, three changes to the Porsche 911 RSR have been implemented by IMSA. A new, revised rear-wing will work in conjunction with a new front aerodynamic splitter to help improve downforce for the cars. Subsequently, due to the higher drag of the revised aerodynamic package, a larger air restrictor has been agreed upon to help return the car, based on the seventh-generation of the 911 road car, to the pre-adjustment top speed levels.

For this weekend’s Road Race Showcase at Road America, the trio of Porsche 911 RSRs entered in the GTLM class will utilize the latest specifications for the car for the first time. None of the three – the Nos. 911 and 912 Porsche North America “works” entries or the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR, has tested with the latest updates.

Having worked closely with IMSA to find the set of changes, Porsche Motorsport North America now hopes that the playing field for all marques will be more even for the remaining four races on the schedule.

All Part of It. Porsche Motorsport North America On-Site Parts and Service

According to Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) parts manager Ralph Hollack, the logistics of stocking parts for up to 50 Porsche race cars that will compete this weekend at Road America is perhaps the hardest part of the providing a parts source for Porsche customer teams at the track. Early in the week of an IMSA race weekend, Hollack receives large shipments of parts from both Weissach, the worldwide Porsche Motorsport headquarters in Germany, and Santa Ana, California, PMNA headquarters. With back-to-back race weekends occurring all summer, thousands of parts from engines to the smallest nuts and washers need to be sorted and stored on the run at the race track. The consecutive race weekends make it necessary to place the parts orders from one track so they will arrive in time to use at the next track. It is the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and smaller TUDOR GTD teams that rely on the PMNA parts staff the most. The truck’s large inventory represents a parts supply to these teams so they don’t need to carry a full inventory on the team transporters. Furthermore, the staff’s expertise with all the models and years of Porsche race cars helps crew chiefs and technicians solve problems quickly.

The most visible service the PMNA parts staff offers is during the race itself, especially during the long endurance events. Hollack and his parts specialists keep in touch with the PMNA engineers in pit lane via radio and by monitoring the customer team communications chatter. Anticipating team needs based on track situations, PMNA can pull the parts that might be needed when the car comes into the pits. The team can either pick up the part or PMNA can run it to the pits or garage so the Porsche customer can repair the car and get back in the race.

All this activity requires substantial overhead and expense, but the customers tell Hollack that the on-site service and parts expertise is a large part of what convinced them to race Porsches rather than other marques. Hollack also reports many GT3 Cup Challenge customers tell PMNA that since they know Porsche is there for support, they can operate with lower budgets because they can carry fewer spare parts. This allows them to run in the series where they may otherwise not have the budget to do so. With a different manufacturer, an early-weekend crash may put the car in the trailer for the rest of the event, but in the TUDOR GTD or Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge, it is simply business as usual and often times the car can be repaired for the next morning.

Racing wise, it's going to be very interesting and a challenge, both with driving and the set-up work.

As we can apply our new BoP update on the car this weekend, I expect that we will be able to fight more towards the front, and, I hope, to be able to fight for more victories this season. With a lot of different types of corners and long straights at Road America, I think it will be interesting to see how the car performs with the adjustments.”

Ms. Snow, who has had a notable professional racing career herself (1999 12 Hours of Sebring class winner, Porsche GT3 Cup Gold class champion, 2009 Porsche GT3 Cup Gold class champion and ALMS GTC champion, to name a few) is semi-retired from racing after a bad on-track incident last year in the Porsche GT3 Cup race at Road America.

On her 2013 accident: “I never knew how many friends I had in motorsports until the accident last year. Between e-mails and social media, I must have received thousands of ‘get-well’ wishes. After initially feeling that I didn’t want to get back in the car again, I have put the accident behind me and raced in the Porsche GT3 Cup a couple of times since.

On women in the series: “It was especially gratifying to see three women in the race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, including Christina Nielsen’s overall podium finish.

On son Madison’s progression in the sport: “As a professional driving instructor at Miller Motorsports Park, I have seen the growth in Madison – now 18 years-old – not only as a driver, but as a man. He has always been fast, but he is now learning his role as a team member, working with the crew and his co-driver Jan Heylen to get the maximum from a race weekend. As a mother, this is very gratifying. At Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the car started at the back of the pack because of a penalty, and Madison worked hard to hand it off to Jan in fourth place. He showed both the aggressiveness and patience to work his way through the field on a very tough circuit.”
