Wisconsin Rush
Patrick Gallagher may not be the traditional hometown hero, but he is the closest in geographic vicinity to the four-mile road course. Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, also has some history at the scenic racetrack that none of his competitors can match. During the fall of 2012, Gallagher earned the title of SCCA National Champion after winning the Formula Enterprise race during that year’s SCCA Runoffs.

An SCCA National Championship is not only the most coveted award in North American amateur motorsports, but is also held in high regard by many racers who make a living driving racecars. Gallagher would like to add his name to the list of past SCCA Champions who have enjoyed long careers in the pro ranks, like Roger Penske, Bob and Scott Sharp, Boris Said and Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal.

Story Leads
The SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup Series Presented by BFGoodrich Tires goes back to a course that has become the favorite of many drivers from all over the world, Road America. At just over four miles in length, the circuit has something for everyone. Elevation changes, long straight and a combination of slow- and high-speed turns have led many drivers to call this the ‘Spa Fracorchamps’ of North America.

As the penultimate stop on the 2014 calendar, the Championship picture is beginning to come into focus as we head toward this weekend’s event. Currently, Koch sits atop the point standings with a 55-marker lead over John Dean. While Koch’s lead may be sizeable, the championship battle is not over. All one needs to do is ask John Dean how a little tough luck can affect your season.

Koch, of Glendora, California, can head to the scenic course with confidence running high. With a season-long total of six wins in his No. 12 ALARA Racing/Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5, Koch has scored five of those each of the last five times he has taken the green flag, including weekend sweeps at the Houston and Canadian doubleheaders.

ALARA Racing, the team behind Koch, will also field four additional cars. Team principal Ara Malkhassian, of Houston, will return to the track where he scored his most recent win in 2012, at the controls of his No. 11 ALARA Racing MX-5. Rookie Timothy Paul, of Mahopac, New York, will go for his second top-five finish while driving the No. 8 ALARA Racing/Cellmark MX-5.

Completing the ALARA complement of cars will be Tim Probert (No. 26 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Houston, and Brent Mosing (No. 10 ALARA Racing MX-5), of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Misfortune has befallen Dean, of Sebring, Florida, as he has endured some uncharacteristic finishes, starting in Houston. Following contact on the final lap of Race Two at the Houston doubleheader, Dean recorded a ninth-place finish. Dean’s Sick Sideways teammate, Nathanial Sparks, of Spanish Fort, Alabama, looked strong at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. However, Dean, in the No. 16 Projections Research/PPG MX-5, lacked the off-the-trailer speed that Sparks had in his No. 8 OOTSK Performance/Bimmerworld MX-5. In Canada, Dean recorded finishes of six and fourth, respectively, after starting eighth in both races.

With a Runoffs win at Road America under his belt, Patrick Gallagher, of Thornville, Ohio, may step up as the leader of the CJ Wilson Racing quartet of drivers. In his last race at the circuit in 2012, Gallagher drove to a gold-medal finish in Formula Enterprise. In 2014, he will pilot his No.28 MedBuild/Henry Schein/ModSpace MX-5 around the four-mile course.

Looking for tutelage from their teammate will be rookies Joey Bickers (No. 29 Mazda Motorsports/BFGoodrich Tires MX-5), of Moorpark, California, and Devin Jones (No. 35 Veristor MX-5), of Mooresville, North Carolina. Both Bickers and Jones have made the adjustment to the close, competitive nature that has become the norm in the Mazda MX-5 Cup. Nick Igdalsky (No. 27 Pocono Raceway/ModSpace MX-5) has signed on to fill the seat normally occupied by Charles Paquin for the Road America doubleheader.

Atlanta Motorsports Group will head to Road America with four cars in tow. This team will sport a very family-friendly feel as a pair of brothers and a father/son combination will be racing for this Atlanta-based team. Sebastian Landy (No. 49 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5) and Forrest Landy (No. 48 Excitations.com/Atlanta Motorsports Group MX-5), both of Great Falls, Virginia, are scheduled to be in action. Sebastian, the younger of the brothers, has raced the entire season thus far, while this will be the second race weekend for Forrest.

The father/son duo of Joseph and Lucas Catania, both of Cazenovia, New York, is also slated to be at Road America. Currently Lucas, driving the No. 17 Atlanta Motorsports Group/NY Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5, sits fourth in the Championship standings during his rookie year. The elder, Joseph, will be at the controls of his customary No. 18 Atlanta Motorsports Group/NY Spine & Wellness/SOS MX-5.

Copeland Motorsports will be making a return to the series with a slightly modified driver lineup. Dean Copeland, of Bowie, Maryland, will anchor the team in his No. 7 Copeland Motorsports/SyncSpeed Inc. MX-5. Copeland was a winner at this track in 2011 and may be able to score another win if things go well. He will help series first-timer Alex Ratcliffe, of Leesburg, Virginia, come to terms with racing his No. 77 Copland Motorsports MX-5 around the giant circuit.

Beth Chryst, of Herndon, Virginia, will be the sole single-car team competing at Road America. As one of the most popular drivers in the paddock, many fans will be glad to see Chryst back behind the wheel of her customary No. 2 Studio Rhoad Marketing/Chryst Brothers Construction MX-5.

The top three positions in the Skip Barber MAZDASPEED Pro Challenge Championship have retightened following the series’ foray north of the border. Drake Kemper (No. 99 Royal Rugby SBMX-5), of Toluca Lake, California, still holds the lead with 453 points. Ben Albano, of Greenwich, Connecticut, sits 10 markers back, in his No. 61 Project Yellow Light SBMX-5. Robby Foley, of Randolph, New Jersey, has moved into third, with 423 points to his credit.
