Lowell Broesamle of Munith to Serve as Pure Michigan 400 Honorary Starter

Pure Michigan announced the results of the Pure Michigan 400 honorary starter contest today, naming Lowell Broesamle (pronounced bray-zum-lee) of Munith, Michigan as the 2014 Pure Michigan 400 honorary starter. Broesamle will wave the green flag at Michigan International Speedway on August 17.

Broesamle was nominated by his daughter-in-law Jennifer Broesamle of Gregory, Mich. A long-time NASCAR fan, he was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jennifer Broesamle noted in her entry that people would never know about the diagnosis by his positive outlook.

“Our family wants to thank everyone who voted; we are overwhelmed by the support,” said Jennifer Broesamle. “We also would like to thank the VA hospital cancer unit in Ann Arbor, Michigan for all their help in treating Lowell.”

In addition to racing, the Broesamle family enjoys state park camping trips, hunting in the beautiful landscape and fishing in the blue waters of Michigan.

“We received nominations from many dedicated race fans – many with compelling stories,” said Leslie Hornung, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “Lowell’s story received more than 1,000 fan votes and showcased a passion for racing and the spirit of Pure Michigan.”

As honorary starter, Broesamle will receive a ride in the official pace car for the Pure Michigan 400. He will also attend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers’ meeting.

The Pure Michigan 400 honorary starter contest asked fans to submit entries of 50 words or less explaining why they should be selected as honorary starter. Fans of Pure Michigan voted on their top entries. Broesamle’s entry received 1,061 votes and was chosen by Pure Michigan from the 10 entries with the most fan votes.

“We are honored to welcome Lowell Broesamle and allow him the opportunity to wave the green flag for the Pure Michigan 400,” said MIS President Roger Curtis. “We continually strive to offer memorable experiences for our guests and it will be fun to present one to Lowell. This was a fun contest to let fans show their love of Pure Michigan and racing.”

Pure Michigan is a brand representing business, talent and tourism initiatives across Michigan. These efforts are driven by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, which serves as the state’s marketing arm and lead advocate for business growth, jobs and opportunity with a focus on helping grow Michigan’s economy.
