2014 Watkins Glen: Jimmie Johnson NASCAR Sprint Cup Post-Qualifying Press Conference

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS - QUALIFIED 3RD

TALK ABOUT YOUR OUTLOOK AND YOUR CAR AS YOU GET READY TO GO RACING HERE TOMORROW: "Very fast race car. We unloaded strong and found something really good for race trim. It didn’t work so well yesterday for us in qualifying trim. We were still eighth on the board, but a pretty good gap from where we were up to the front. The No. 88 car had a great lap so we really copied the No. 88’s qualifying set-up. It had a lot of speed. So a big thank you to Steve Letarte and Dale, Jr. for a fast set-up under the car that extra little bit to get us up there in the top five. Things were much different in the car and on my lap in the second session. I was trying to mimic little traces and lines I had seen on the data from Junior’s lap. I had a mistake into turn six so I regret that a little bit, but still with the mistake a real good starting position."

DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED TO DALE, JR.’S BRAKES? "I wasn’t aware of that especially if it goes all the way to the floor it sounds like there if fluid coming out somewhere. I don’t know. That is a good question and a terrible situation to have here. I figured that out going into turn one back in 2000. When they go to the floor it’s not pretty. He didn’t go off or hit anything did he? Just on pit road? I’m merely speculating but when you sit if you have got the brakes real hot you can boil the fluid and get a long pedal when you go back out on the track your next outing. I’m not sure you would get the brakes to that point, but that could be an outside shot."

HOW TOUGH IS IT TO THROW SOMEBODY ELSE’S SET UP ON THE CAR AND THEN JUMP IN THE CAR AND QUALIFY IT THAT WAY? "It’s tough especially when the gear ratios changed like they did. I had a completely different set of gears to choose from and shift points and trying to get all that right. Knowing that I was only going to run two laps today is not the easiest thing, but fortunately you run enough laps, especially at this point in my career up here that I feel like I can get it close. I did on that first run. We ran like a ’60 and on that second run ran in the ‘30’s. I found a few more tenths going back out that second time."

WHO DO YOU CONSIDER THE FAVORITES TO BE FOR THIS RACE? "It’s so tough to call it. The way things turn out with track position it seems to kind of - in my opinion tilt Penske’s way. They seem to do a great job with saving fuel either driver or team or combination of both more than likely. When it comes to sheer speed I would put Jeff (Gordon), Marcos (Ambrose), Brad (Keselowski), the No. 18 didn’t qualify all that well and I’m not sure why. I don’t know how he looked in race trim, but Kyle (Busch) seems to know how to get around here just fine. I think for on straight-up speed that is kind of - and the No. 47 (AJ Allmendinger) those would be your favorites. Then as you get into strategy and stuff I think it opens up five or six more cars."
