DeltaWing Coupe to Start Tenth at Road America

Coming back from a fire that destroyed the revolutionary coupe four weeks ago, the DeltaWing® Racing Cars team will start tenth in tomorrow’s Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America, race nine of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

The team put the repaired Sebring chassis back into action in time for this weekend’s event, overcoming wiring issues on Friday to tally very competitive times on Saturday, including a third place posting in afternoon practice. Adding to the pressure was the memory of last year’s American Le Mans Series race, when drivers Katherine Legge and Andy Meyrick took the DeltaWing roadster to the race lead en route to a fifth place finish. The duo picked up where they left off at the famed four-mile road course, increasing their pace in each session, with. Meyrick handling qualifying duties today.

Andy Meyrick
“The bottom line is, we’ve got a good race car. We can’t fight with the other prototypes in a single lap pace. We’ve taken the strategy that we have a good race car, quick in traffic. We’ll maximize our performance and do what we can. Qualifying was never going to be our strong point here. We’ve got a good car, a balanced car, one that should be quick in traffic. The car feels as good as it’s ever felt in terms of balance.

“The whole point is to go quicker in each session, and we’ve done that. We’ve gotten quicker and quicker every time the car has gone out. To be third in free practice was good, I think that’s a truer representation of our race pace in comparison to our competitors. If we can run those sort of lap paces during the race, we’ll move forward. The team has done a great job getting the car put together – we were quick her last year, so we’ll try for more of the same.”

Katherine Legge
“I think we’ve got a good race car, Andy and I are comfortable and fast in the car at a race pace - we’re working on getting the best result tomorrow, not on outright speed in qualifying. It would be nice to prove that the coupe is competitive now – we think it can legitimately place on the podium here, especially if our efficiency makes it possible to do one pit stop fewer than everyone else. And we definitely want to finish the business we started here last year.”

Managing Partner Don Panoz
“The team has done a good job, basically building a brand new race car. We’re in a good position – and after all, it’s the technology that makes this car exciting, not the sheer horsepower or flat out speed. This car was not designed around brute horsepower; it’s the architecture and technology of this car that will win a race. So I’m looking forward to a good race tomorrow.”

The two hour and 45 minute race will be tape delayed on FOX Sports 1 at 6:30 ET Sunday.
