Sixth Place Finish for Meyrick at Road America


Andy Meyrick and the DeltaWing Racing Car team finished a strong sixth place in the Prototype class and eighth overall at round nine of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship at Road America.

Just four weeks on from a cockpit fire at Mosport which saw the 28 year-old’s race cut short, the team had worked tirelessly on a full re-build of the chassis before returning to the circuit which produced the DeltaWing roadster’s best ever finish, a fifth place in 2013.

Established in 1955 with it’s legendary four-mile, 14-turn circuit, Andy was looking to showcase the DeltaWing coupe’s straight-line speed on the challenging track.

With Andy qualifying the car on Saturday in ninth position the team planned a two-stop strategy with team-mate Katherine Legge starting the two-hour 45-minute race on Sunday.

With the British duo aiming to manage the coupe’s fuel consumption and take advantage of its straight-line speed, Legge handed the car over to Andy on lap 23 in fifth place. The team then kept him on-track for as long as possible but despite setting a quick lap time of 1:59.718 a total of six yellow flags meant Andy only came in for a final stop for fuel and tires with just 39 minutes remaining. The yellow flags meant that other teams were also able to two-stop diminishing the coupe’s fuel consumption advantage.

Back on-track in 24th position overall, Andy utilised the DeltaWing’s speed to make his way back through the field battling with Pruett in the Riley-Ford and finally bringing the car over the line in sixth place, eighth overall.

“It’s great to get a good finish here,” said Andy. “The team has done a really great job to re-build the car and to go on and get a sixth place finish.

“The car’s straight-line speed again showed that we have a quick car, we were just so unlucky with the yellows and everyone else was able to save fuel, our technical advantage was lost.

“I enjoyed the race and had a great battle in the last few laps with Pruett. We could have had a better finish if it wasn’t for the yellows, but to finish where we did and to be up running with cars on the same strategy means we know we have a good car. We’ll be looking to build on the momentum at Petit Le Mans.”
