2014 Michigan II: Chip Ganassi Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Race Preview

I BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT

Veteran Numbers: Jamie McMurray will make his 425th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) start this weekend at Michigan International Speedway (MIS). McMurray made his first career start on Sunday Oct. 6, 2002 at Talladega Superspeedway filling-in for an injured Sterling Marlin in Chip Ganassi’s No. 40 car. The next week McMurray would capture his first series win at Charlotte Motor Speedway, setting the NSCS record for least amount of starts before a driver’s first win.

Finishing the Job: Through 22 races this season, rookie Kyle Larson currently ranks eighth, amongst all 67 drivers who have competed in NSCS races this season, in positions improved over the last 10 percent of a race. Larson has averaged 1.4 spots gained and has moved up a combined total of 30 positions this season. Larson’s ability to finish races has helped lead to his five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes.

Karting for a Cause: Kyle Larson recently participated in the Weld Racing Go-Kart Spectacular in Knoxville, Iowa, an event that pitted several NASCAR drivers against fans who donated money for charity. The event, which Chevrolet helped to sponsor, raised over $52,000 for Kick-It for Children's Cancer, a program of Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR MICHIGAN INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY

Jamie McMurray and No. 1 McDonald’s Team

WGI Recap: The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) paid a visit to the Finger Lakes region of New York and Watkins Glen International over the weekend for the second and final road course race of the season. Jamie McMurray, driving the McDonald’s Chevy SS started from the 14th position and ran among the top-10 for a majority of the 90-lap race before finishing with a 14th place finish.

McMurray at Michigan: McMurray has made 23 previous starts at Michigan International Speedway. He has one top-five, four top-ten finishes and he has led a total of 40 laps. He has completed 4,388 of 4,539 (96.7%) laps of competition. His best qualifying effort came in 2010 when he started second and his best finish of fourth came in 2004. His average start is 24.4 with an average finish of 19.4.

Getting a Head Start: McMurray will spend an extra day at MIS to participate in a 2015 NASCAR test on Monday, following the Pure Michigan 400, as the sanctioning body will look to start making rules packages for 2015 NSCS competition.

Golden Arches: McDonald’s will be back as the primary sponsor on the No. 1 Chevy SS this weekend at MIS. There is no reason to go hungry on your way to the track, McDonald’s has several locations near MIS, including the closest restaurant located at 306 S Main St, Brooklyn, Mich. (517) 592-6134

Kyle Larson and No. 42 Target Team

WGI Recap: In NASCAR’s second and final stop at a road course this season and his first-ever Cup start at Watkins Glen International (WGI), Kyle Larson exhibited his perseverance on Sunday by moving past two tough practices and qualifying at WGI to race his way to another top-five finish. While the weekend did not start off like Team Target would have liked, it ended on a high note as Larson raced from a 23rd place start to a fourth place finish.

Larson at Michigan: Larson has made one previous NSCS start at Michigan International Speedway earlier this season, where he started 12th and finished eighth. He has also made two Nationwide Series starts at MIS where he has one top-five and two top-ten finishes, with an average start of 7.5 and an average finish of 5.
