2014 Milwaukee: Chevrolet IndyCar Race Preview

With nine victories in 15 races by drivers powered by the Chevrolet V6 2.2 liter IndyCar engine, the Bowtie Brand takes the lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series Manufacturer Championship standings to race No. 16 of the season on the Milwaukee Mile for the final short-track race of the season. After Sunday’s 250-lap/250-mile race on the storied one-mile track, the two final round of the 18 race schedule includes the Sonoma Raceway road course, and Auto Club Speedway, a two-mile D-shaped oval

In addition to the Manufacturer Championship contest, Team Chevy driver Will Power brings a four point lead in the Driver Championship standings over his Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves to Milwaukee. With three races to go, the points battle is the smallest that it's been since the 2009 season when first and second place were also four points apart. The average deficit with three to go since 2006 is 25.13 points.

“As the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series rounds the proverbial corner of the schedule for the sprint to the championship, Team Chevy is focused on carrying momentum and executing flawlessly at each of the three remaining races,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager, Verizon IndyCar Program. “The Milwaukee Mile is first up with a rich open wheel heritage. To be successful there requires drivers and engineers to master both oval skills and road course setups due to the nearly flat 2.50 banked straights and relatively shallow 9.250 banking in the corners. Chevrolet and our technical partners will bring power with highly optimized drivability and reliability to the Mile allowing our Team Chevy drivers to be in a position to win on Sunday.”

Giving Chevrolet three of the top-five in the Driver Championship standings is the third Team Penske driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, who sits in fifth place 101 points behind Power. With 54 maximum points available at Milwaukee, the points lead could change as it did at Mid-Ohio. The championship lead has exchanged hands five times in 2014.

Will Power: St. Petersburg-Grand Prix of Indianapolis: Ryan Hunter-Reay: Indianapolis 500-Detroit 1; Will Power: Detroit 2-Pocono and Helio Castroneves: Iowa-Toronto.

Other Chevrolet IndyCar V6 drivers in the top-10 of the standings are: Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Chevrolet, sixth; Sebastien Bourdais, No. 11 Team Mistic KVSH Racing Chevrolet, eighth and Tony Kanaan, No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, heads to Milwaukee ninth in the standings.

Live television coverage of the ABC Supply Co. Wisconsin 250 at Milwaukee IndyFest is set to start on Sunday, August 17 at 3:00 ET on NBC Sports Network. Live radio coverage will be on IMS Radio broadcast on XM Radio Channel 209 and Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 213.
