2014 NHRA: Brown, Matco Tools Team Lead DSR Qualifying Friday At Brainerd

Some racers have a knack for winning at certain race tracks and for 2012 NHRA Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown, that track is Brainerd International Raceway.

Brown, who collected the Top Fuel crown at the Brainerd track in 2012, pooled with four Pro Stock Motorcycle wins here, led Don Schumacher Racing's Top Fuel contingent on Friday evening at the penultimate race in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series' regular season.

Brown's Matco Tools dragster sped to a lap of 3.827 seconds at 316.38 mph as the sun set to the west of the Land of 10,000 Lakes. DSR's Tony Schumacher finished Friday No. 6 in the U.S. Army dragster at 3.836, while the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Electric team of Spencer Massey looked to be on a pass quick enough to claim the provisional pole before the engine let go near the finish line. Massey, whose dragster was the quickest to half-track at 3.037-seconds, finished the run at 3.875 at only 260.91 mph. That positioned the defending event champion in the No. 9 spot.

"The track was definitely a lot better for everybody, I think it threw everyone a curveball," Brown said. "We definitely could have gotten after it a little bit harder. It's typical Brainerd where you never bring enough to the party.

"All-in-all we had a great first two runs and we were very consistent for the Matco team, so we'll go into Saturday and see what the track can hold and we'll go for it. We'll be at the back of the pack and we'll get after it."

In the first qualifying session, Massey led the field as the three DSR dragsters finished 1-2-3, as the bright red Battery Extender car was followed by Schumacher and Brown.

The four DSR Funny Cars will look to improve during the final day of qualifying at the Brainerd track. Matt Hagan paced the DSR flopper quad on Friday at 4.138-seconds at 308.21 mph for the sixth quickest time of the day in the Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T.

Jack Beckman was No. 8 for Valvoline SynPower at 4.154, Ron Capps No. 10 at 4.162 in the NAPA AUTO PARTS machine, and 2006 Brainerd Funny Car winner Tommy Johnson Jr was No. 12 for Make-A-Wish at 4.203-seconds in the first qualifying session.

Last August, Massey and Capps doubled-up for the nitro wins at Brainerd. DSR's seven drivers have combined for 14 wins at the Minnesota track, led by Brown's five and Capps' four.

Qualifying resumes Saturday with sessions scheduled for 1:30 and 4 p.m. (CT) as the fields will be set for the 33rd annual NHRA Nationals at Brainerd.
