Geico Honda's Tomac Slogs Through Mud To Earn Top-10 Finish In Indiana

With a day that started off with pouring rain on an unfamiliar track, GEICO Honda 450cc rider Eli Tomac overcame numerous difficulties to secure a seventh-place overall finish at the Thor Indiana National at Iron Man Raceway.

After laying down the fastest lap of the day in practice, Tomac came up just short of another podium finish in Moto 1. The red-hot rider had to pull off course on the first lap to receive service from his team, but still fought his way back around the treacherous course to grab the fourth position by the end of the race.

"It was a rough day overall," Tomac said, "which is a little weird because I usually get along with muddy conditions. Practice showed I really felt comfortable in these wet slick conditions. I was fastest overall and felt confident going into the first moto.

"Unfortunately, I had some issues that were messing me up. Plus, I had to pull off the track and put new goggles on after the first lap of Moto 1 because I couldn't see at all from the mud. I made a couple mistakes here and there too, where I ended up tipping over. The first moto was really just a fight to stay up and out of the roost as much as I could."

The rain came to a halt in time for the second 450 moto, but vision still remained a problem for the young GEICO Honda rider. Yet even with a couple falls, Tomac was able to endure and bring home a 10th place finish.

"Vision was tough but going into the second moto the rain actually quit," Tomac said. "I still had a little problem seeing clearly because of all the roost but it was two more crashes that really messed me up.

"All I can really say is that two mistakes kept me from getting on the podium here, I think."

Even after a rough day in Indiana, Tomac is excited to return to Iron Man Raceway to try his luck again next year.

"This was our first year at Iron Man," Tomac said, "I think it's a pretty cool facility really. The rain kind of washed everything out today but you could tell it's going to be a good course for years to come and I'm excited to come here again."

Tomac will have one more chance at bringing home another overall 450 moto win when he heads to Toole, Utah, on Aug. 23 for the season-ending Utah National.
