2014 Michigan: Tayler Malsam NASCAR Truck Race Recap

In his seventh NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start this season with Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM), Tayler Malsam had the fastest truck on the track for the majority of the 100-lap race, ultimately earning a fourth-place finish after an impressive performance behind the wheel of the No. 32 Outerwall Chevrolet Silverado at Michigan International Speedway. Coming into the weekend with a top-10 finish in his first and only NCWTS start at the Brooklyn, Michigan track, Malsam knew that his racing style was well fitted to conquer the 2.0-mile oval. After two solid practice sessions with his TSM team, Malsam advanced the Outerwall Chevy to the final round of knockout qualifying and earned his best starting spot of the season.

Taking the green flag from the eighth position, Malsam was lightning-fast around the oval until the first and only caution flag waved on lap nine. Opting to follow the leaders, crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. called the No. 32 truck to pit road for a quick top-off of Sunoco fuel. Malsam soon became the fastest truck on the track, and by skillfully using air off other competitors to maneuver his way through traffic, the Outerwall Chevy continued to lay down the fastest laps throughout the race. Hillman called for a green-flag pit stop on lap 53, giving Malsam four new Goodyear tires and fuel before rejoining the field in seventh position. Continuing to be the fastest truck on the track, Malsam and TSM teammate Ron Hornaday quickly worked their way into the top five before both crew chiefs called the TSM trucks to pit road for a quick refuel with just 11 laps to go. Malsam found himself behind Hornaday once again after the stop, and with less than 10 laps remaining, the TSM duo tried to pick off competitors until the checkered flag waved. Despite a stellar performance behind the wheel of the No. 32 Outerwall Chevy, Malsam came up short, claiming a fourth-place finish at Michigan after running within the top 10 for the vast majority of the race.

Tayler Malsam on Racing at Michigan International Speedway:
"We had an awesome truck this weekend; it was so fast and it handled flawlessly. Hillman and the guys at Turner Scott Motorsports make my job easy when they bring me such great equipment to work with. Michigan is my kind of track; it's basically like Daytona without the drafting. I was able to race with other drivers, and race hard. My spotter Eddie D'Hondt was great today and helped me a lot when I would get a run. I can't thank everyone within this organization enough for their hard work and support. It feels great to get my career-best finish with a great team and a great sponsor like Outerwall on the truck."
