2014 NHRA: Jack Beckman NHRA Nationals At Brainerd Qualifying Report: No 10

Jack Beckman and his Valvoline SynPower team have one goal on Sunday at Brainerd International Raceway, round wins.

"It's put up or shut up time," Beckman said after qualifying on Saturday afternoon. "We didn't end up in the top half, but a lot of that was due to the rain delay. We made decent laps on three out of the four laps, but lost five points due to putting oil on the track on the first pass. That's a tough one."

Beckman and new crew chief Todd Okuhara know the importance of round wins and valuable NHRA Mello Yello Series points as just two races remain to secure one of the 10 sought-after slots in the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship six-race playoff that begins near Charlotte next month.

Beckman qualified his Valvoline SynPower Dodge Charger R/T in the No. 10 spot on Saturday afternoon at Brainerd with a lap of 4.115-seconds at 309.70 on his final attempt in qualifying following a nearly 80-minute rain delay in central Minnesota.

"We don't want it to come down to two or three or four points, we want to do it by 20-point round wins and that just means we have to be making final rounds and they don't come easy in NHRA Funny Car racing," Beckman said of the stiff competition in the 10,000 horsepower nitro category.

"Having Cruz (Pedregon) first round is a huge hurdle and it's a must win. We have to hope that Del (Worsham) and Tim (Wilkerson) don't advance too far and I like them, but I like us a lot better. We just have to get past Cruz and keep the momentum going."

Beckman's DSR teammate Tommy Johnson Jr, the 2006 Brainerd Funny Car winner, faces the 10th place driver Wilkerson in the first round. You can bet that Beckman and the Valvoline team will be rooting on their teammate and the Make-A-Wish team, who secured one of the 10 Countdown spots by qualifying fourth on Saturday at Brainerd.
