2014 Mid-Ohio: Justin Marks NASCAR Nationwide Race Recap

Justin Marks, driver of the No. 31 SOL REPUBLIC Chevrolet, rallied from an overheating engine early in the race and an ensuing pit-road speeding penalty to earn a sixth-place finish at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, his career-best NASCAR finish.

Marks, making his second NASACR Nationwide Series (NNS) start this season for Turner Scott Motorsports, qualified sixth for the Nationwide Children's Hospital 200 after leading Friday's final practice session. As the green flag waved on Saturday afternoon, Marks immediately broke into the top-five. Following a lengthy caution, however, Marks drove off the track slightly, resulting in debris clogging the Chevrolet's grille. Although Marks tried to remain on track to get inside the team's fuel window, the water temperatures were increasing rapidly. Marks entered pit road on lap 18 for four tires, fuel and removal of debris on the grille. While exiting pit road, however, he received a speeding penalty and had to serve a pass-through penalty. He rejoined the field in 28th place.

Marks began working his way through the field, breaking into the top 20 on lap 27. He entered pit road for a scheduled pit stop on lap 39, again for four tires and fuel. Following a lap 46 restart, Marks raced into the top 15, and then into the top five. Due to his early unscheduled pit stop, Marks was on an opposite pit sequence than the majority of his competitors. While many of them pitted on lap 51, moving him into third place, Marks made his final pit stop on lap 60 for four tires and fuel. He rejoined the field in 17th place and wasted no time getting back to the front.

Marks moved into the 10th position on lap 70. Another full-course caution waved on lap 71, with Marks moving into eighth place as two of his competitors entered pit road. In the remaining 15 laps following the restart, Marks gained two more positions to finish sixth, his career-best NASCAR finish in 46 starts.

Justin Marks on Racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course:
"That ended up being a great day. I was really disappointed that I went off track, and then even more upset when we got the speeding penalty. But, [crew chief] Shannon [Rursch] had a plan and kept the team on track. The SOL REPUBLIC Chevrolet was really good all weekend from the time we unloaded off the truck. This is my best finish I've ever had in a NASCAR race and I'm really glad that I got it with Shannon and this Turner Scott Motorsports team."
