The Gold Cup is the north west’s premier historic race meeting and the anniversary recalls its halcyon days, when non-championship Formula 1 races were held at the venue. The roll of honour includes World Champions Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jack Brabham, Sir Jackie Stewart, Denny Hulme, Jim Clark and John Surtees.

The Gold Cup was also run for the Formula 2 and Formula 5000 racer s of the day, and these powerful cars will headline this weekend's action, competing for the Derek Bell Trophy. 1974 Gold Cup winner and F1 driver Ian Ashley will be one of he contenders. Ashley also raced in the 1993 event, held during the BTCC’s Super Touring era. Those days will be recalled when the Super Touring Car Championship, featuring double champion John Cleland, takes to the track.

A 20-race programme will showcase the best of historic racing, with contests for single seaters, sportscars, GTs and saloons. Over 200 cars will take to the Cheshire circuit, from humble Minis to Le Mans-style prototypes, and the battles on track will be every bit as intense as they were in the sport’s halcyon days.

A golden era of rallying will be remembered on the venue’s special stage, with 1980 s fire-spitting Group B cars expected to steal the show.

Oulton Park will also host over 1,000 classic cars this weekend, with car club displays filling the picturesque infield. Historic military vehicles will recall the venue’s role as an army staging camp in World War II, and will be joined by a Spitfire from the Lytham St Annes Display Team.

There will also be action in the air, with the Wildcat Aerobatic Display and Breitling Wingwalkers ready to thrill crowds.

There will also be bus tours and parades of the circuit for fans to enjoy and the crowd will also be entertained by Jazz bands throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The Gold Cup’s appeal extends to younger racegoers, with bouncy castles, a free adventure playground, face painting and free entry for children aged 12 and under.
