Disappointing Race Weekend for Paffett in Nurburgring

This weekend saw Gary Paffett at the Nurburgring in Germany, after a promising free practice session, which saw Paffett come 4th, it left a positive feel for the race, but this was not the case for the rest of the weekend.

With mixed conditions for the qualifying, taking place on the Saturday, Paffett qualified in last place for the race. Both Paffett and Mattias Ekstrom were caught out and were to be the biggest casualties as they went out early in damp conditions on wet tyres as the sun started to dry out the track, neither made it through to the second qualifying and both lined up at the back of the race grid.

Starting from the back gave Paffett a disadvantage from the beginning of the race. By the second lap, Paffett and Timo Glock had tangled and collided as they battled for 20th position. Paffett was knocked off the track leaving damage to the body of his car. Paffett and Glock were still fighting it out by lap 39, as Paffett overtook Glock for the last time and finished in 16th, leaving Glock behind in 17th. Marco Wittmann was the winner of the race

Paffett on his weekend race said, “Free Practice was in mixed condition on Saturday morning so it was a little difficult to get much setup work done in dry conditions. However my pace was good in both wet and dry conditions so I was pretty please with how the car was handling.

Qualifying was again in mixed condition starting damp and drying up after just a couple of laps. We all started on wet tyres and I was setting fastest laps for the first 3 laps of the session. I was however one of the last to switch to slicks and as a result had just 2 laps to get a lap time done on a drying circuit. I made a mistake on the entry to turn 5 on my final lap and went wide losing a lot of time and with the track improving at around 1.5 seconds per lap I ended the session in 23rd place having just missed out on getting another lap in.

The race was always going to be difficult starting from so far back and with the forecast saying it would be dry making up a lot of places would be tough.

I made a good start and gained 4 places on lap 1. On the second lap I had a wheel to wheel with Timo Glock but he. On the entry to turn 6 Glock hit my rear wheel and turned me around pushing me off the track causing a lot of damage to the bodywork on the side of my car in the process. Once I got going again I was a long way back and struggling with a lack of down force because of the damage. I had a race long battle with Timo Glock and finished 3 seconds ahead of him while catching the pack of cars that were fighting over the final points paying positions. Unfortunately the time lost with the contact at the start ruined my chances of scoring any points.”

The DTM season continues as the championship goes to Lausitzring, Germany. Gary Paffett will racing 12th of September.
