Mitchell Uses Late Race Surge to Finish Second at Springfield

Mason Mitchell and Mason Mitchell Motorsports (MMM) have proven to be a contender for the win in 2014 no matter what kind of racetrack the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards visits. Sunday afternoon was no exception for the driver of the No. 98 Musselman’s-Wildlife Foundation of Florida-TTS Ford as he finished second in his third career dirt race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

"To be able to finish second in just my third career dirt race is huge" Mitchell said after climbing from his No. 98 car on Sunday. We led a bunch of laps and had fresher tires at the end of the race then a lot of drivers in front of us. We passed five cars in the last 20 laps, but just ran out of time to catch Kevin Swindell. We finished ahead of the 90. We have to keep doing that every week and staying positive."

Persistent rain throughout the night canceled Menards pole qualifying Sunday morning, meaning the field would be set by owner points.

Once the green flag dropped Mitchell positioned his No. 98 car in front of the field. Mitchell paced the field for the first 30 laps. Veteran crew chief Jamie Jones called Mitchell down pit-road at lap 30 under caution for four tires and fuel.

After restarting in the sixth position Mitchell quickly worked his way up to the second position before the caution waved on lap 37.

Mitchell continued to run among the top-three before making his final pit-stop on lap 60. After restarting in the seventh positon, Mitchell methodically began working his way back to the front passing five cars in the final twenty laps and crossing the finish line in the second position.

Mitchell leads the ARCA point standings for the third consecutive week by 25 points over Grant Enfinger. The finish marked the eighth time that the West Des Moines native has finished in the top-five in 2014.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is the Herr’s Live Life with Flavor 200 from the Madison International Speedway Sunday, August 24th. The race will be televised live on the CBS Sports Network beginning at 3:00 P.M. Eastern.
