CAMARO Z/28.R AT VIR: Down the Stretch in GS Championship Run

CAMARO Z/28.R AT VIR: Down the Stretch in GS Championship Run

Chevrolet looks to extend its four-race winning streak with the new Camaro Z/28.R this weekend as the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races for the first time in three years at Virginia International Raceway this weekend. With five wins on the season, Chevrolet leads the Grand Sports (GS) manufacturer championship heading to the 3.27-mile, 17-turn road course just over the North Carolina-Virginia border.

Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport each will field Camaro Z/28.Rs at VIR in the season’s 10th race of 12 for 2014. Looking ahead to the final three rounds, Chevrolet holds a 19-point lead in the manufacturer standings with 105 points available over the balance of the season.

"VIR is a classic track in every sense. Its mix of slow-speed corners, fast sweeping turns and a long backstretch provides an excellent test," said Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet Program Manager for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. "Our Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.Rs have proven to be competitive on nearly every track on the schedule. Five victories - on a variety of circuits - in the first year for the Z/28.R platform bear that out. As the season winds down, securing the maximum number of points at each round becomes more critical. That is our focus at VIR."

Another performance this weekend similar to the one put together by Camaro Z/28.R teams at Road America would go a long way toward Chevrolet winning its first GS championship in the series. CKS Autosport’s Eric Curran and Lawson Aschenbach won a dramatic race two weeks ago on the final lap in their No. 01 Camaro Z/28.R.

At VIR, Jordan Taylor - one of Corvette Racing’s factory drivers - will team with Curran as Aschenbach has a prior racing commitment. Taylor will race in a Continental Tire series event for the first time since the end of the 2012 season at Lime Rock Park.

Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis - in Stevenson Motorsports’ No. 6 Camaro Z/28R - were second to the CKS duo at Road America. Liddell drove from 16th to second in the final 30 minutes. Andy Lally and Matt Bell will drive the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro Z/28.R. Bell was third in qualifying at Road America and was the runner-up in the 2010 race at VIR for Stevenson Motorsports.

Developed alongside its production counterpart, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R incorporates the same performance elements that make the 2014 Camaro Z/28 the most track-capable Camaro ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce-generating aero package as the production model including: the front splitter, rear spoiler with wickerbill, and hood extractor vent, among other items.

The Z/28.R is also powered by the same LS7 7.0L V-8 engine as the production Z/28 and employs the unique, helical-gear limited-slip rear differential found on the production model. It is standard in the Z/28, helping the driver put down more power to the pavement when exiting corners.

Live race coverage from VIR is set for 2:05 p.m. ET Saturday at IMSA.com. FOX Sports 1 will air the race at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 31.
