Spa Preview: Alex Hopes To Learn Something From Arsenal

We’ve had four weeks with no racing since the last GP3 Series round at the Hungaroring, but that doesn’t mean I’ve had four weeks off… The past month has flown by to be honest. We’ve been really busy preparing for this weekend’s round at Spa, where I’ll be hoping to build on my championship lead and add to my two wins. I don’t know where all the time’s gone!

Along with my team-mates and the whole Carlin team, we’re all looking forward to racing again, and after Spa we’ve got Monza two weeks later – two great, historic circuits that are always nice to race on.

We’re quite confident that we should be quick again at Spa. Now that we’re entering the last part of the championship, everything becomes even more important than it was before, and my team have put in loads of preparation to be fast. I raced at Spa in Formula 3 and I’m happy enough that I’m quick there – it’s a circuit I really enjoy.

I’ve got quite a decent advantage in the points at the moment but that doesn’t mean I’m thinking of changing my approach. At the moment my buffer is nowhere near enough to be fully conservative and just drive around for points. You have to push for the win, because that’s the only hope you have of getting on the podium, and that’s the way to make the gap bigger.

For a while it looked as though Jimmy Eriksson was going to be my biggest threat for the title, but things turn around so quickly. Jimmy has given us all a big lesson that you can drop away quite significantly if you get a couple of weekends that don’t go well, and now I have to look at Richie Stanaway as my immediate competition.

But GP3 is so hard to predict – I can only adopt the approach that I have to fight the guys who are directly around me, or hopefully behind me!

As you probably know by now I love my sport, and I was able to get to see Arsenal’s first Premier League game of the season last weekend against Crystal Palace. It was a mega day out and to get a 90th-minute winner was pretty cool! I’ve missed football over the summer – after all, England didn’t last very long in the World Cup… My dad’s not into football at all so my being a fan of Arsenal all comes down to my mates at school supporting them, although I do follow my local side Colchester United as well.

If you want to apply football terminology to motor racing, in GP3 we’re now getting properly into the title run-in and hopefully promotion! It’s great that the next two rounds are at Spa and Monza – whenever I tell other racing friends they get so jealous, because they’re two fantastic circuits you’d love to race at any day of the week. It really makes you fired up to get a good result.
