Will Kimmel Tests New Salem Pavement In Prep For Daily Double... Running Same-Day Nationwide Race

The Federated Car Care Fall Classic at Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery will soon be here, and considering a large portion of the track has just been repaved, ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards teams are eager to check it out.

Third-generation ARCA racer Will Kimmel tested at Salem Wednesday afternoon, becoming the first driver to test the new surface.

"We spent about two hours testing today," Kimmel said.

"It really wasn't an all-out test because the asphalt is so new, but we got a pretty good idea of where the grip was and what the track's going to be like."

The first repaving at the high-banked, half-mile since 1977 was recently finished with the full stretch of turns three and four sporting a new coat of asphalt.

"When you're running in new asphalt, it's a process where you work your way up to speed, and you begin to learn what the cars will need and what the track still needs.

"There's still some work to be done to the track going into three and there are some bumps off (turn) four, but it's going to be really nice.

"There's definitely some speed in it. We were doing 17.80's consistently and we weren't really up to speed completely, so that's good. The track temperature was 120 degrees and the asphalt was hot and greasy which you're going to have when you're on new blacktop."

Kimmel feels that much of the character that was the old Salem Speedway will remain.

"I think it's going to be better; the paving definitely helped.

"I was about a car off the wall all day. I could never run right up there because all the loose sand got kicked up to the top. We just need to get more cars on it and start working it in. But I think it's going to be better. You'll still run right against the wall, but now I think there's going to be a lower groove that could be just as fast. It's going to be better all the way around. They did a great job with it."

Kimmel is going to have to be better "all the way around" on raceday, as he will be competing at Chicagoland Speedway in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race earlier in the afternoon. From there, he'll perform the stock car version of the daily double when he bolts out of Chicagoland and aims toward Salem for the ARCA race later that night.

"We have a friend of the family that's going to arrange a charter flight for us to get to Salem. Probably have Chris Bailey shake the car down for us that day. We won't qualify, but we'll get some practice in to make sure everything's good."

No matter how you shake it out, it's going to be a very tight turnaround for Kimmel, considering the ARCA race is scheduled to start at 7:15. Plus, he'll lose an hour going from Chicagoland's central time to Salem's eastern.

Salem Raceday Schedule
ARCA Racing Series practice for the Federated Car Care Fall Classic by JayC Food Stores at Salem will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, September 13 with final practice to follow at 1:45. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell is set for 4. A driver autograph session follows at 4:45 with driver introductions at 6:45. The race is scheduled to get the green flag at 7:15.

ARCAracing.com will provide live timing and scoring of all on track activities, and the race will be streamed in live audio.
