Leal Tops Spa GP2 Practice

Julian Leal has started his weekend in style having topped the time sheets as both he and Felipe Nasr took part in the GP2 Series Free Practice session at Spa-Francorchamps. Leal set his flying lap later than most and was the man to beat as the session encountered a red flag towards the end. Nasr had been an early front runner however he was unable to set a faster lap due to the session stoppage – this left him in 14th position overall. The team look forward to continuing their strong showing as they take part in qualifying later this afternoon.

It was a dry session for the drivers this morning as they took to the track in order to reacquaint themselves with the notorious circuit and collect all important data. In the opening minutes Nasr was the first of the Carlin men to head out to set his first flying laps. After warming up his tyres he was running in a strong second position overall and looking to be enjoying the challenges of the Belgian circuit.

However the times began to fall quickly and Nasr fell down the order as different practice session strategies came into play. Nasr came into the pit lane to look over the data and while he was sitting stationary team mate Leal took to the track for his run. The Colombian racer was soon setting personal best sectors and with a purple final sector he flew to the very top.

With the majority of the cars still in the pit lane at this point he encountered no one to trouble him for his position; this ensured that Leal was able to use the time to focus on other aspects of his race simulation with his engineer.

When Nasr came back out on track he was only able to complete a couple of warm up laps before a spin and off track incident for Stefano Coletti brought out a red flag; the marshals used the time to clear the Racing Engineering car off track and sweep away the gravel. However Nasr had been building up to his flying lap just as the incident happened ahead of him and sadly was unable to complete his run. The Brazilian racer, who celebrated his 22nd birthday yesterday, also picked up a puncture in the midst of this action and saw his session come to an end – finishing in 14th.

Leal meanwhile was still at the very top when the on track action was stopped and despite taking to the circuit again when the incident was cleared neither he nor the rest of the field were able to improve vastly on their earlier performances; as a result Leal claimed the top spot as his own.

Speaking of his session Leal said, ‘It was a good session for us we used the time well to work on a few things and the times were there. I had a good gap out on track so was able to manage that with the help of the team and get the lap in. The car felt really good; the setup, the tyres – everything just worked well. Now we need to keep pushing because that is what everyone else will be doing as we head into qualifying this afternoon but we’re in good shape and it’s nice to come back and be on top after the summer break.’
