Status GP Trio Kicks Off Spa GP3 Weekend

Status Grand Prix drivers Nick Yelloly and Richie Stanaway both ended free practice for the Spa-Francorchamps GP3 Series round in the top 10.

With Status GP lying second in the GP3 teams’ championship, the Belgian Grand Prix support event marks a return to action after a one-month summer break. But in typical Spa style the session featured rain halfway through. There were then two red flags caused by accidents.

In common with the rest of the field, Status GP trio Yelloly, Stanaway and Alfonso Celis Jr started the session on used Pirelli P Zero tyres from the previous round in Hungary. None of them set a representative time on new rubber.

Englishman Yelloly, who is sixth in the standings, finished seventh fastest, losing half a second in the final sector on his best lap when he was baulked by a slower car.

New Zealander Stanaway, who is second in the points, ended the session in ninth place on a circuit where he scored a GP3 race win in 2011 on his debut in the series.

Mexican GP3 rookie Celis used rubber from his qualifying accident at the Hungarian GP support round. He therefore expected big gains on new tyres, but without an opportunity to use them he ended up 23rd.

Qualifying begins at 0945 on Saturday, with race one at 1720 and race two on Sunday at 0925.

Driver quotes:

Nick Yelloly
“We got through a bit of our test programme and had a positive feeling, which is nice, but then it started raining on and off, and people started crashing, and I got held up. It’s frustrating to have been held up on my best lap, and I’m amazed that despite losing half a second I’m in the top 10. We also ran new brake pads and discs for the first few laps so we weren’t pushing.”

Richie Stanaway
“We got a short amount of running at the start, and got a little bit done, but it would have been nice to run the full 45 minutes, although everyone is in the same boat. I didn’t really lay anything down as far as going for a time is concerned so I’m not stressed about where we are. For sure, it feels good to be back at Spa, where I took my first GP3 win – now I want another!”

Alfonso Celis Jr
“I honestly like the rain but it was a very messy session. I used the tyres from my qualifying crash in Hungary. Normally that’s fine because you switch onto the new tyres and go for a time. So I had not much rubber at all to show performance, and the session was all about surviving.”
