2014 Bristol: Trevor Bayne NASCAR Nationwide Race Recap

Trevor Bayne, driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang, came home with a 13th-place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event on Friday night at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

“We had some good speed on the longer runs,” said Bayne after the race. “After 20 or so laps our car would begin to turn better through the corner, but we were really never able to get a good handle on the car tonight. I’m proud of all of my guys for the hard work they put into this AdvoCare Ford this weekend. We’re ready to improve from this and go after that checkered flag next weekend in Atlanta.”

With rain delaying the start of the race over an hour, Bayne took the green flag from the 12th position and was able to maintain his position inside the top 15 for much of the early stages of the 300-Lap event. After pitting for four tires under the first caution period on Lap 41, crew chief Chad Norris utilized a Lap 60 competition caution to pit the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Mustang for fuel only, moving Bayne up to the eighth position.

Bayne would continue to battle for position inside the top 10 until a Lap 113 pit stop shuffled him back to the 15th position. The driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford would remain in 15th for much of the middle portion of the evening, racing for position with Roush Fenway Racing teammate Ryan Reed before a Lap 182 caution trapped Bayne one-lap down to the race leaders.

Despite being one-lap down, Bayne and crew chief Norris never gave up on their efforts to improve the handling of their Ford. After pitting for four tires and a chassis adjustment on Lap 264, Bayne was able to race his way into the free pass position just prior to a Lap 280 caution.

Once back on the lead lap, Bayne steadily worked his way forward, improving six positions in the final 20 laps of the event and taking the checkered flag in the 13th position.

With the result, Bayne remains sixth in the championship standings and trails championship leader Chase Elliott by 63 points as the NNS heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway next weekend.
