2014 Belgium GP (Spa): Formula One F1 Starting Line-up Grid & Race Preview

By Mike Sulka

The Formula One series will race at the legendary Spa Francorchamps circuit in Francorchamps, Spa, Belgium for the 2014 Belgium Grand Prix. The circus has been coming to the circuit since its inception, though there have been gaps in its history due to safety concerns or other issues.

Thirteen times since 1999, the F1 series has raced at Spa. Five times it has been won by Ferrari (including 2009 - Raikkonen & 2008 - Massa after controversial penalty to Hamilton), six times it has been won by McLaren. Sebastian Vettel's 2011 win in his Red Bull broke a string of eleven straight grand prix wins by Ferrari or McLaren at Spa dating back to 1998 when Damon Hill won in a Jordan-Mugen-Honda after a horrific opening lap and subsequent red flag that took out a significant portion of the field.

In 2012, order resumed again as Jenson Button would take victory in a McLaren, while in 2013 Vettel and Red Bull returned to the top step of the podium.

Don't look for McLaren or Ferrari to take top honors at the 2014 Belgium Grand Prix (44 laps 7.004 km/4.352 miles), Mercedes have been dominant all weekend and all season.

Starting from Pole will be Mercedes F1 driver Nico Rosberg who took his fourth straight Pole of the 2014 season. The only bad news for Rosberg is that the Belgium Grand Prix Pole sitter has only won five times in the last 20 Grand Prix.

However, the recent trend is a bit different with two of the last three Belgium GP being won from Pole, and seven of the last eight Grand Prix at Spa being won from the front row.

Lewis Hamilton and his No. 44 Mercedes will be the second car on the front row, and as has been the case most of the season should be Rosberg's only challenger.

We should note that there is a small chance of rain is in the Sunday forecast, but as we've seen, the weather can change quickly.

The front-row will have a distinct advantage as the mid-packers will have to navigate a notoriously nasty Turn One. Ultimately, the question tomorrow is this... Will everyone make it through Turn One cleanly and if not, who won't survive the bad luck.

At this point, we are going to go with Nico Rosberg to take victory. Rosberg leads the championship points standings and should retain that lead with a clean start.

But should the rains fall, any one of the top-ten qualifiers could end up on the top step of the podium.

So sit back and enjoy Formula One's 2014 Belgium Grand Prix!
