2014 Sonoma: Chevrolet IndyCar Qualifying Recap

For the fourth time in this season, Will Power has put his No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet on the pole, and will lead the Verizon IndyCar Series field to the green flag at Sonoma Raceway. It is the 36th career pole for Power, and his fourth at Sonoma Raceway, where he has scored three wins in four years.

Power, one of four Chevrolet IndyCar V6 powered drivers in the Firestone Fast Six for the GoPro Grand Prix, set a new track record in Round One of one minute and 17.2393 seconds at an average speed of 111.161 mph. His official Verizon P1 Award time from Round Three is 1:17.4126, at an average 110.912 mph.

"Congratulations to Will Power and his Chevrolet-powered Verizon Team Penske squad on another impressive qualifying effort today at Sonoma!" said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager for the Verizon IndyCar Series. "Will is clearly executing at a high level and Team Penske have their sights laser focused on putting a championship winning car under him. Tomorrow’s race on this technical track with its ever changing grip level will be a serious challenge for all who push to run up front. With 6 of the top 8 on the grid representing Team Chevy it will be a real exciting race for the Chevrolet fans."

Scott Dixon qualified the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, in the third position with his teammate, Ryan Briscoe, No. 8 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, set to start in the fifth grid position.

Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, will start sixth after losing his fastest lap to a penalty in the final round of qualifying.

Power’s pole winning effort is the 12th pole-winning effort for Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 drivers this season. Castroneves started on the pole for the second race on the Streets of Toronto when the field was set by entrant points.

Josef Newgarden (Honda) and James Hinchcliffe (Honda) complete the Firestone Fast Six for Round 17 of the 18-race season.
