Piloting the No. 11 Team HYDROXYCUT - KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone car, the 35-year-old Frenchman went out in group two in Round One of qualifying and recorded a fast lap of77.6653 seconds(110.551 mph)placing him second among the 11 drivers in his group. He therefore advanced into Round Two. In the second round he was fourth after his first stint, on black (primary tires), but when he went to the reds he could only log a best lap of 77.7176 seconds(110.477 mph),which placed him seventh of the 12 drivers, just one position short of advancing to the final round, the Firestone Fast Six.

"Overall I am happy with the result. The Hydroxycut - KVSH Racing team did a really good job. The car was competitive on both black (primary) and red (alternate) tires," Bourdais said. "Unfortunately, in the second round of qualifying, I made a mistake on the first lap on the reds and that is the lap you need to put everything together. So that was pretty much that. I just feel bad for the team. They deserved a top-six car. I will just have to try and make up for it tomorrow."

Commenting on tomorrow's race, Bourdais said, "We will have to see what kind of animal we get tomorrow in the race. Sometimes it is filled with yellows, sometimes it is green all the way. Hopefully we can move forward and get a strong result in the Hydroxycut machine."

In the first 16 races of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season, Bourdais has now qualified in the top-12 in 12 of 17 races (only once on an oval, Iowa, sixth), including four top-five efforts and two poles (Mid-Ohio and Toronto Race 1). In thenine full road/street qualifying sessions this season, he has advanced to the second round eightout of nine times and made the Firestone Fast Six three times, Mid-Ohio, Toronto and Long Beach(qualified 11th, fifth and 10th respectively for the second race of the Detroit, Houston and Toronto doubleheaders where the qualifying format is just a single round with two groups).

Bourdais is making his fourth appearance on the challenging 2.385-mile, 12-turn Sonoma Raceway permanent road course. He has qualified in the top-10 three times in four attempts with a best starting position of third in 2012 (started eighth in 2011 to go with today's seventh place qualifying spot. In three previous races he has finished in the top-10 twice with a best showing of sixth in 2011 (10th in 2013).

Bourdais currently sits ninth in the championship standings with 418 points, but is just 54 out of sixth, 70 out of fifth and 76 out of fourth. With the two races remaining and Fontana worth double points there is a maximum of 162 points available. In the first 16 races of the 2014 season, Bourdais has finished in the top-10 seven times including five top-five showings, two podium performances with one win (Toronto race one), his first in an IndyCar since 2007.

This weekend's GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, August 24. It can also be heard live on IMS Radio Network affiliates, XM Channel 209, Sirius Channel 213 IndyCar.com, IndyCarRadio.com or via the Verizon IndyCar14 app.
