Nasr Takes Stunning Victory At Spa

Carlin driver Felipe Nasr took a stunning victory at Spa-Francorchamps this morning, with a mature and impressive performance in the GP2 Sprint race. Nasr took the lead at start, despite starting from fifth place and led throughout despite intense pressure from Johnny Cecotto. Team mate Julian Leal was stuck in the mid field after starting from 13th place and took tenth at the chequered flag.

After taking fourth at the chequered flag yesterday, Nasr lined up fifth for today’s reverse grid race. Team mate Leal started from 13th place after an unlucky race yesterday. As the lights went out, Nasr made a stunning start, threading his way through the cars ahead to take the lead with the inside line into La Source leading the field away on the first lap. Team mate Leal had stayed clear of incident and had moved up to 12th.

While Nasr maintained the lead, Johnny Cecotto and Jolyon Palmer were involved in a close battle for second place, with Cecotto finally taking the upper hand and setting off in pursuit of Nasr, who had pulled out a small gap ahead of the squabbling duo. Leal meanwhile was making good progress, the Colombian had moved up to 11th place by lap five.

There was no chance for Nasr to settle into a comfortable rhythm, the Brazilian was well aware of the constant presence of Cecotto in his mirrors; the gap just a second on lap six. The gap on lap seven was just 0.688 seconds, with Cecotto looking faster in the run up through Eau Rouge.

For several laps the gap yo-yoed between the pair, down to just four tenths of a second and never more than a second, Nasr kept pushing though. The Carlin man extended the gap bit by bit, making up time particularly in the middle sector. Nasr set his best personal lap on lap 16, with the gap to Cecotto now 2.3 seconds.

Just one lap later Nasr had increased the gap to 3.4 seconds, seemingly untouchable. The Banco do Brazil crossed the line to take his fourth victory of the season by over 5 seconds as Cecotto dropped back. Leal managed to cross the line in 10th place, despite having challenged Tom Dillmann for ninth for several laps.

Speaking about his victory, Nasr said, “Nothing is over yet. We’ve just taken our fourth win and we’ve shown how strong we are. I believe so much in these guys [Carlin team]. Yesterday we came back from 11th on the grid to take fourth and today to take the win. There’s many points to play for and I’m already looking forward to the next race. I think we’ve shown it’s not always about being aggressive, it’s about being consistent and pushing hard.”

Trevor Carlin added, “Another stunning result for the team. To take victory in both GP3 and GP2 this morning shows the strength of the team and drivers across the board. Felipe really earned this result, he was very mature in the early stages of the race, withstanding the pressure but looking after his tyres to enable him to push at the end. Julian deserved better this weekend, he was very quick and we look forward to seeing him challenging for top results again in Monza.”
