Hard-Fought Victory in Sydney for Volvo Polestar Racing

Volvo Polestar Racing and Scott McLaughlin turned around a dreadful result in the first two V8 Supercars races at Sydney Motorsport Park to achieve a hard-fought victory in the third and final race on Sunday.

"The car was awesome and I can't thank the team enough. I am a bit overwhelmed that we got this victory, it has been bloody tough in the last few races," said McLaughlin.

The race weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park turned out to be a roller coaster result-wise for Volvo Polestar Racing. It started well with pole position ahead of the second race for McLaughlin, but quickly turned to worse when his engine failed in the first race and a wheel came off in the second.

Things were even worse for team mate Robert Dahlgren who went off into the barriers in the wet second race. The damage from the incident was so substantial that Dahlgren had to sit out the third race.

"It started to rain in the first race but I picked up more and more pace towards the end. About three laps into race two, I pushed for an overtake and ran a bit wide which spun the car into the wall. It was unfortunate and I am sorry for the boys in the team. It was disappointing not being able to take part in the final race, but we'll instead focus on the upcoming enduro races," said Dahlgren.

Come Sunday and McLaughlin was right back on form, claiming yet another pole position for the final 51-lap race. The Kiwi drove to a strong lead after the pit stops, but had to back off towards the end of the race due front-tyre wear. The lead was down to below a second on the final lap, but McLaughlin was able to stay ahead to score his and Volvo Polestar Racing's second V8 Supercars victory of 2014.

‘We went a different way with the setup for the race, and the test day has obviously worked. I started to lose my front tyres towards the end, and I was so relieved when I crossed the line. I am proud of myself and the team. This result is what we have been working towards and goes some way to making up for some tough previous results," said McLaughlin.

The victory saw McLaughlin move into eighth in the drivers' championship, just five points behind Ford driver Chaz Mostert in seventh position. The next event is the first endurance race with the Sandown 500 on September 12-14, where the drivers will share car with a co-driver and have pit stops with mandatory driver changes.

"The team went through almost everything this weekend with technical problems, incidents and crashes. The weekend ended in the best possible way though with Scott McLaughlin scoring a fine victory, an especially important victory as it is our first in the longer Sunday races. It is certainly promising ahead of the coming endurance races," said Polestar owner Christian Dahl.
