So Close But So Far For Conway In Sonoma

This weekend saw Mike Conway continuing in the IndyCar series in Sonoma California, which marks the last for Conway in the No.20 Fuzzy’s car for the year.

This was Conway’s last IndyCar race, as Ed Carpenter will finish on the Oval track in Fontana next weekend. Unfortunately for Conway this weekend was not his most successful.

Qualifying for the Sunday race, took place on the Saturday in typical sunny conditions, Conway looked quick in the initial laps of time trials in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevy. He jumped to the top spot in his first lap in the round one and then held a transfer position with just one minute remaining in the 10-minute session. Unfortunately, Conway’s car didn’t hold the grip with the red Firestone tyres in his last lap and he failed to make the transfer to round two at Sonoma Raceway. Conway was to start 17th on the grid for Sundays race.

After a frustrating qualifying, the race was another chance for Conway to finish on a high. Conway got off to a good start considering he was 17th on the grid, and threaded his way through the first lap incident to pick up several places. As the race progressed with Conway pushing and race strategy playing into the hands of both Mike and his ECR team, it was Conway who made the overtake of the race by taking Tony Kanan for the race lead in spectacular fashion and then went on to stretch out a ten second advantage. Conway could have found himself on the podium again, but fuel shortage ruined his chances. As he tried to keep others behind, Scott Dixon managed to slide into the lead and win the Sonoma race.

Conway could not hold his place in second as he used an overtake trying to stop Dixon from passing which hurt the mileage of his car, and he then ran dry of fuel on the last corner of the last lap where he was overtaken by several cars and just rolled over the finish line and took the chequered flag in 14th position.

Conway said, “I was doing all I could to keep Scott Dixon and Ryan Hunter-Reay behind me. The team knew that Graham Rahal had to pit for fuel. I could see that the boys behind me were a little quicker and I was trying to save as much fuel as possible too. It was tricky but I thought I was making a good job of it. I was hitting my fuel number through the last stint. I thought it would be good but I suppose the lap when I used the overtake button to keep back Scott cost us. There wasn't much more I could do at that point and I thought I could hang on for a podium finish. But when I got to turn 10 on the last lap, the engine just died. It picked up a little into turn 11 but finally just shut off in the corner. It was a tough way to finish the year with the Ed Carpenter Racing team with the Fuzzy's Vodka car. I really want to thank Ed and his guys, the Fuzzy's boys, Chevrolet and our suppliers for a great year. It was a very good year. Two wins for me and one for Ed so far. I would love to see Ed win it next week in Fontana too.”

No more IndyCar races this season for Conway, but he will be racing from September the 20th at Circuit of the Americas in Austin for WEC.
