2014 Fontana: Charlie Kimball IndyCar Race Preview

BET YOU DIDN’T KNOW THAT

Diabetic Living Feature: Charlie Kimball was featured in the 2014 Fall Issue of Diabetic Living Magazine along with his endocrinologist, Dr. Anne Peters. The piece focuses on Dr. Peters and how she helps athletes like Kimball compete in their respective sports while managing their diabetes.

Superstitions or Routine?: Many athletes follow a set of strict superstitions before a big day, but Kimball has put his focus on a routine that addresses both his nerves and his health. His routine starts early by eating a similar breakfast every race day and then eating an identical pre-race meal, consisting of plain chicken with pasta, fruit, and salad. Once he has made it to the grid for pre-race, he goes through a typical preparation routine of getting his helmet ready, chatting with the team, and listening to the National Anthem, but he also makes sure to check his blood sugar levels one last time before getting in the car. The last thing Kimball does before the race starts might be considered a superstition by some – he makes sure to enter the cockpit on the same side every time he gets in the car.

The Origin of the No. 83: Charlie Kimball’s car number (83) has a very special meaning to not only him, but also his father, Gordon, and team owner, Chip Ganassi. In 1983 Chip Ganassi had his best finish at the Indianapolis 500 while driving a car that was designed by engineer and car designer, Gordon Kimball.

Keeping It In The Family: The driver of the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Chevrolet is not the only Kimball with racing in their blood. Kimball developed his passion for racing after watching his father, Gordon, work as a design engineer for racing powerhouses, McLaren and Ferrari. Kimball’s sister, Rachael, has also made a career out of the sport, working with the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR FONTANA

Charlie Kimball and No. 83 Novo Nordisk Team

Left Turn Only: Throughout Kimball’s four season Verizon IndyCar Series career, he has qualified in the top 10 seven times (Texas 2011, New Hampshire 2011, Kentucky 2011, Texas 2013, Fontana 2013, Iowa 2014, Milwaukee 2014) and he has finished in the top 10 eight times (New Hampshire 2011, Indianapolis 2012, Fontana 2012, Indianapolis 2013, Pocono 2013, Fontana 2013, Texas 2014, Iowa 2014) on ovals. While his first podium came on a street course in the streets of Toronto, Kimball’s second podium of his career came on an oval at Pocono Raceway in 2013.

Kimball, on Fontana: “I'm looking forward to closing out the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season this weekend at Auto Club Speedway. It's been an up and down year, but I know the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team can end it on a strong note. There's a lot that can happen during those 500 miles, but we showed last year that we can be a contender here in Fontana. With the testing time ahead of the race weekend, it gives us just that extra bit of data and opportunity to improve the car before the green flag on Saturday evening. The No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Chevrolet will be quick, going for the win!"
