2014 Atlanta: Ford NASCAR Nationwide Race Quotes

JOEY LOGANO - No. 22 Discount Tire Ford Mustang - PRESS CONFERENCE - "Our Discount Tire Ford was a little bit off to start the race - just too loose - and just trying to keep the rear tires on it somewhat for the long run. I felt like we were a second-place car even then. We made some good adjustments and got closer. We put some tape on the grille and lost it all again, and then we started to tighten it back up, but then the last run I finally had it tightened up to where I could hustle the car and drive it pretty hard. I took off that last run and started to catch Kevin a little bit and then started to get too tight. He started driving away a little bit and then last six or seven laps all of a sudden the light switch turned on and I started catching him. I just ran out of time. I wish there were five or seven more laps and I could have got to him and tried to do something with him. We were catching him two or three tenths a lap there at the end and having some fun with it, but it was too little too late. We’ll have to continue to battle tomorrow."

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT TEAM PENSKE’S DOMINANCE? "We’ve been working really hard. For me and the 22 bunch, at least on the Cup side, it’s our second year together and we’re definitely starting to build that chemistry. Obviously, the notebook is there and we’ve had some fast race cars the whole year. We’ve had consistency the last six or seven races over there, so we’re proud of that. It’s a good time to get that going into the Chase. And then over here on the Nationwide side they’ve been fast over here since I was driving at Gibbs. This 22 car is fast, so it was a good change for me to obviously get over here and be able to work with Jeremy Bullins on the Nationwide car and this whole Discount Tire team. They’ve been fast and everyone knows what it takes to go fast. It’s always hard work and better aero, better motors, better chassis and working on your suspension the best you can. Obviously hitting the setup and having that chemistry throughout your team, that’s how you go fast. It seems like they’ve done a good job on this 22 Nationwide car and with the Cup cars - both of them. We have some good people and that’s what it takes."

THOUGHTS ON TIRE MANAGEMENT? "I thought it played in quite a bit. The last run there some guys were coming and short-pitting and the question was, ‘Can we make it to the end?’ And then it just kind of depended on what happened there and when the 5 car was gonna pit, when we were gonna pit and try to make up time. There was no strategy played by us to be able to make it happen. We did what he did and tried to pass him that way, but tires fall off so much that short-pitting gives you that quick burst of speed that’s two-and-a-half or three seconds a lap, but then you pay for that throughout the rest of the run when everyone else gets their tires, so eventually it equals back out. But you try to get that track position by short-pitting or something like that, and also with these Nationwide cars you have a limited amount of tires so when you take them, it didn’t quite come into play tonight, but we weren’t far from it. If there was a couple more cautions there would have been a time when we would have had to stay out and it would have been a mess."

WHAT MAKES JEREMY BULLINS SUCH A GOOD CREW CHIEF? "Quite a bit. Obviously, he’s been doing this quite a few years now so he’s got that experience behind him. It’s very hard for a crew chief to be able to work with four different drivers throughout the year because we all want something else, and working with a rookie also with Ryan Blaney is a big challenge for him and he’s done a great job with it. To be good doing that you’ve got to have an open mind, you’ve got to have confidence in what you’re doing. He’s got some good people surrounding him. He’s really, really good."

DAVID RAGAN - No. 98 DenBeste Ford Mustang - "Top 10 finishes are what we strive for. Certainly everybody wants to show up at these races and win, but for a part-time team and a group that doesn’t have an affiliation with any Sprint Cup teams, that’s a great run. We outran some great cars. We still could have made it a little bit better at times. We all can do our jobs just a little more perfect, but we had a good time. It was a lot of fun. This race track is a blast." ONLY TWO CAUTIONS TONIGHT. "We worked on it every stop. We only had enough tires for those few cautions, but if we could have worked on it better and had a little bit better track position I think we had a top five or six race car, but we’ll take a top 10. We’re taking baby steps and we’ll go get ‘em next time. That was a lot of fun."

CHRIS BUESCHER - No. 60 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ford Mustang - "That was OK. I thought we were gonna be a little bit better, but this surface will throw you for a loop in a hurry. It was really cool having the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the car. It was a real attention-getter. The kids loved it, so that was really neat. Hopefully, we’ll do something like that again in the future. Our guys worked really hard all day and got our Ford Mustang home in 13th, so we got a couple of spots there on good strategy. I’m looking forward to Richmond."
