2014 Fontana: Chevrolet IndyCar Race Recap

Team Chevy closed the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season with Tony Kanaan, No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet capturing his first win of the season, and Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, being crowned the 2014 series’ champion.

Kanaan’s victory in the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway is his 17th career win, and the 12th win of the year for Chevrolet, who clinched its third consecutive Manufacturer Championship after the 16th race of the 18-race season. He was credited for leading twice for a total of 64 laps.

Kanaan led a 1-2-3-4 Chevrolet driver finish in the 250-lap/500-mile race. Teammate Scott Dixon, No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, finished second followed by Ed Carpenter, No. 20 Fuzzy’s Premium Ultra Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet taking the third spot on the podium. Juan Pablo Montoya, No. 2 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, was fourth.

Power’s title is the first of his career and the 13th for his team owner Roger Penske. He ended the season with three wins, four podium finishes and four poles. It is the second drivers’ title in three seasons for Chevrolet. Power also led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the final standings for Chevrolet powered drivers. His Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves, No. 3 AAA Southern California Chevrolet finished in the runner-up position with Dixon claiming third place in the standings. Montoya jumped to fourth in points when the checkered flag flew.

"Wow! It was great to see Tony’s emotion as he celebrated with Chip, Dario and his No. 10 team in the Winner Circle," said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. "Tony led a 1-2-3-4 Chevrolet finish. What a great way to end the season. What an amazing finish to an exciting IndyCar season".

"Congratulations to Will, Tim, Roger and the No. 12 Verizon Team on their championship," Campbell continued. "Will ran a smart race with high percentage moves throughout the night to bring home his first title. He gave it his all.

"To see Team Chevy drivers capture the top-four positions in the final standings reflects the durability, reliability, power and excellent fuel economy of the Chevrolet IndyCar V6 engine."

Ryan Briscoe, No. 8 NTT Data Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet, finished seventh with Power in ninth place at the checkered flag to give the Chevrolet 2.2 liter twin turbo charged direct injected engine six of the top-10 finishing positions in the season finale.

Chevrolet ended the championship-winning season with eight different drivers taking the Bowtie to Victory Lane a total of 12 times.

The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Schedule is expected to be announced in the near future.
