Top Eight Finish at Brands Hatch for Eastwood

Charlie Eastwood finished his weekend at Brands Hatch in an encouraging manner after finishing the final race in eighth, his best result since the season opening weekend at Silverstone in April where he had a seventh place finish.

The action at Brands Hatch got underway on Friday with four testing sessions. Charlie had a strong day, finishing well within the top ten of all four sessions, recording the third fastest time in the last session of the day. Overall he set the fifth fastest time of the day, just 0.150s off Struan Moore, who topped Friday’s timesheets. The field then had a free practice session on Saturday morning in which Charlie finished seventh fastest.

Qualifying proved extremely competitive, with results coming down to the smallest of margins. Charlie was solidly in the top ten for the majority of the session, and was in eighth at the halfway point. With lap times improving in the dying moments, Charlie was unable to complete his fast lap due to a red flag and ended up 11th, less than a hundredth of a second behind tenth place and exactly one second behind pole-sitter Gaetano Di Mauro.

On Saturday afternoon, in the first of the weekend’s three races, Charlie initially shuffled to 12th. He had several battles throughout the race for position and crossed the line after 14 laps in 12th. Starting from 12th in the second race on Sunday morning, Charlie could not battle after an incident on lap one forced him out of the race at Paddock bend.

Charlie started from the sixth row of the grid in 11th in Sunday afternoon’s final race. He made a good start and climbed to tenth on the first lap. He maintained tenth for the majority of the race but then capitalised on a collision between Lima and Palmer on the final lap to cross the line in a strong eighth place

Charlie Eastwood: “It was a bit of a mixed bag of a weekend but we are definitely making progress. Testing went well and I was pleased with third overall on Friday. In qualifying we really should have been around P3, and would have been there but for the red flag. In race 1 we didn’t really make up any real ground and then race 2 was over before it began when I got sandwiched into the first corner and went off onto the gravel. I got a good start in race 3 and pushed for a top five right until the end. I kept Middlehurst behind me, who had won race 2, so we know the pace is there. We’ll keep pushing for the rest of the season.”

Rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the BRDC Formula 4 Championship will take place at Donington Park over the weekend of 20-21 September.
