Penalty Denies KVSH Racing's Bourdais Top-10 Finish In MAVTV 500

KVSH Racing driver Sebastien Bourdais was running in 10th place, but received a late race penalty and finished 18th in last night's MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

Bourdais, behind the wheel of the No. 11 Team HYDROXYCUT - KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone car, started 15th and despite the hectic nature and pace of a 500-mile race that would determine the championship, patiently and methodically began working his way through the field. Bourdais made his fifth pit stop on lap 172. Two laps later, the first and only yellow flag of the 250-lap contest came out. Six cars pitted during the caution period and Bourdais moved into 10th place. Unfortunately, when the green flag racing resumed IndyCar officials accessed Bourdais a penalty for passing Helio Castroneves under the yellow. The penalty required Bourdais to enter his pit box and hold for 30 seconds, which dropped Bourdais to 19th place ending any chance of him advancing in the final standings. Bourdais, who later drove through pit lane to avoid being in the middle of the championship battle, continued to battle and picked up one more position to finish 18th.

Commenting on the race Bourdais said, "It was a very tough night for the Hydroxycut - KVSH Racing team and that is all I have to say about the race."

However, he was more expansive regarding his first season with KVSH Racing saying, "I want to thank Kevin (Kalkhoven), Jimmy (Vasser) and Sulli (James "Sulli" Sullivan) for the opportunity to race with the team this year. I want to thank the sponsors, Hydroxycut, Mistic E-Cigs, Circle K, Plantronics, American Racing Wheels, GEICO and Hippino for all their support. I also want to thank Chevrolet and Firestone. I especially want to thank Steve Moore and the entire team for all their hard work. We worked hard and showed good pace a lot of the time. We earned two poles and won a race. We didn't meet all of our expectations, but we are building something here and I am looking forward to continuing the process during the off-season and next year."

Bourdais, who made his 131st career start, but just his 21st on an oval and second at Auto Club Speedway earned 24 points last night giving him 461 for the season good for 10th in the final standings. The 10th place showing is the four-time Series Champions' (2004-2007) best finish in four IndyCar seasons, two full seasons, since returning to IndyCar competition in 2011. The 35-year-old Frenchman earned seven top-10 finishes including five top-five showings, two podium performances and the one victory, his first in an IndyCar since 2007. The two poles, also his first since 2007, came at Toronto Race 1 and Mid-Ohio, where he finished second.
