2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA U.S. Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 12

Spencer Massey used Sunday afternoon qualifying as a test run before Monday's 60th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

And it worked.

The Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher Top Fuel team recorded a 3.823-second lap at 322 mph to close out their qualifying efforts and establish a race day set up before Monday's Labor Day championship eliminations.

"We ran a 3.79 during Saturday night qualifying but really struggled in the first couple of hits," Spencer said. "It's going to be hot on race day so obviously those quick runs that got the cars qualified in the top half aren't going to really matter on race day."

Spencer's best lap of 3.799-seconds at 324 mph qualified him No. 12 in the 16-car field but it was his last lap that has he and crew chiefs Phil Shuler and Todd Okuhara encouraged for race day eliminations where he will face defending event winner and series champion Shawn Langdon in the opening round.

"We're going to put our race day tune up in this Battery Extender dragster and just get it down the race track. We know what our limits are and we are just going to put it where it needs to be."

Spencer is seeking momentum after struggling through the past nine NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events where they have only picked up four round wins.

"With this being the biggest race of the year and the last regular season race before the Countdown starts we want and need to get some momentum going before we get after it for this championship and there's no better way to do it than win here in Indy at the biggest race of the season."

The six-race Countdown to the Championship kicks off in two weeks near Charlotte and Massey wants to solidify a top-five spot for the Battery Extender team.
