2014 NHRA: Ron Capps NHRA U.S. Nationals Qualifying Report: No. 5

Ron Capps intends to go where he's never gone before Monday in the 60th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals near Indianapolis.

The veteran driver of Don Schumacher Racing's NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car will start the 20th elimination day of his career in drag racing's biggest event of the year.

And he plans to advance to its championship round for the first time in his career and once he gets there he wants to leave with the most prestigious event trophy on the 24-event Mello Yello Drag Racing Series tour.

As much as he savors winning a coveted U.S. Nationals title, the winner of 43 NHRA titles doesn't expect a sleepless night.

"I'm going to go out for a nice dinner with friends and family who are in town and make it an early night," said Ron, who won the Wally trophy Saturday night in a rain-delayed final round of the Mello Yello event that was held two weeks ago at Brainerd, Minn.

"As big as this race is you can't let it affect you to where you change your routines."

Ron has won two titles this season and a total of 10 since Rahn Tobler and his crew joined him after the fourth race of the 2012 season.

"That's amazing," Ron said. "We've only been together for a couple years. We've showed we can win races and I'll just relax, get a good night's sleep and be ready to show up Monday at the U.S. Nationals and just relish being in it with such a great team and great sponsor with NAPA.

"If it happens, it happens."

Ron found the silver lining to losing in the first round of Sunday's $100,000 Traxxas Nitro Shootout.

"We lost in the first round and that helped us start focusing on Monday sooner. Once we were out of that we could fully concentrate on tomorrow.

"You race Monday here like it's all or nothing, like it's four runs for a championship. That's how we're going to approach it.

"We've had a great race car all weekend long. Tobler has it thumpin' and consistent. It's fun to drive.

"I can tell when he has confidence in the race car, and that gives me confidence."

Racing fans and friends of DSR helped raise a record $42,058 to benefit Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health and Camp Riley for Friday afternoon's ninth annual DSR Open House for Riley Kids. The funds push DSR contributions to Riley to over $280,000.
