2014 NHRA: Morgan Remains Optimistic After Early Exit In Indianapolis

By just one-thousandth of a second Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan barely missed capturing the final spot in the ultra-competitive 16-car field of the 60th annual U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway.

The Lucas Oil Ford Mustang laid down a pass of 6.676 seconds in the fourth session of qualifying, landing him just outside the 16th spot held by Rodger Brogdon's 6.675 pass earlier in the same session. Morgan tried to outrun Brogdon in the final session but just couldn't find that fraction of a second to change his fate.

"It is what it is, honestly," Morgan said. "We just missed the mark this weekend. I really feel like we could have qualified. We had worked so hard to get the engine tune-up right, and I think we were finally close to getting it right but I over-shifted in low gear in that last run. There is no one to blame but myself."

While he is disappointed about missing this year's U.S. Nationals, Morgan knows that he did everything he could to try to make it happen. Keeping his head up, Morgan will continue to put in hard work to get ready for the next race.

"We're really trying to run better overall; it just seemed to bite us in the butt this weekend," Morgan said. "We've been trying to work on different carburetors with Holley Performance Products and just got behind on our setup. Once you get behind it's hard to really make any big improvements and you're prone to mistakes.

"We're trying to do the best that we can with what we have to work with. I feel good about our chances of running well again; it's just a matter of getting there."

Morgan will regroup and prepare for the next stop on the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule in Charlotte, Sept. 12-14.
