Hywel Lloyd And CF Racing To Make F3 Cup Debut

British Formula Three National Class champion CF Racing will make its F3 Cup debut at Silverstone National on Saturday 6 September with team boss Hywel Lloyd behind the wheel. This will be Lloyd’s first competitive race since 2012.

Lloyd, 29, won the Formula Renault BARC championship in 2007 ahead of GP3 race-winner Dean Stoneman, Ollie Hancock, and former F3 Cup racer Aaron Steele. Lloyd then spent five years in the British Formula Three Championship before turning his attentions to running CF Racing full time in 2013. His stint in the National Class of the championship yielded five wins.

The Welsh squad quickly found success and took Sun Zheng to the 2013 British F3 National Class title, winning six of the 12 races.

Lloyd said: “We’ve been talking about entering F3 Cup for about a year or so. I haven’t sat in an F3 car since 2012 but when the opportunity comes up to drive an F3 car, you can’t turn it down. They’re such great bits of kit.

“I haven’t really set myself any expectations because I’ll need to relearn the car first and blow the cobwebs off. I won’t be getting in the way in terms of taking points off anyone and with the event being one day, it works really well for us. I raced against some of the drivers when I was in Formula Renault so it will be good to see them and race against them all again.”

The team will field the Mugen-powered Dallara F308 Zheng drove last year in British F3, which as of 2015 will be eligible for the F3 Cup championship. Lloyd isn’t ruling out his team's return to F3 Cup next year, should an interested driver come calling.

“The 2015 plans for the championship are interesting and hopefully the take up will be high. CF would definitely consider running in it if a driver wanted us to. We came to Oulton Park earlier in the year and have been following the championship, like we do most Formula Three championships.”
