Tough Weekend For Lima At Brands Hatch

This weekend saw Lima and Hillspeed head to the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent for Round 6 of the BRDC F4 Championship. The unpredictable British summer weather managed to hold for both days but it was still a weekend of mixed results for Gustavo.

A successful qualifying session on Saturday morning saw Lima secure a 9th place finish so starting on the fifth row of the grid for Race 1. Championship leader, George Russell, had a difficult start to the weekend as damage to the front end of his car early on in qualifying forced him to sit out the final 15 minutes meaning he started from the back from the grid. Pole went to Gaetano di Mauro – the first for him and the Petroball team – with him snatching first place with just a 0.043 second lead.

Di Mauro continued his run of success into Race 1 and took a dominant win, leading the 14 lap race from start to finish. Russell managed to fight his way back from 21st on the grid to take 10th place, just behind Lima who drove a consistent race and maintained his 9th place.

Following the results of Race 1, the reverse grid formation for Race 2 on Sunday morning meant 8th place Will Palmer started from pole; as Lima was just outside the top eight, he kept his position on the fifth row of the grid. Palmer got off to a good start and led the first two laps but an incident on lap three saw him loose position and could only claw back a 7th place finish. Gustavo drove a solid race but the earlier accident, plus picking up some debris in his radiator meant he struggled to keep the engine temperature down as the grass collected in the sidepod reduced the cooling and the engine lost power as it went into failsafe mode, but he worked hard and managed to cross the line in 12th.

The third and final race of the weekend saw a 10th place start for Lima and as the lights went green, he quickly fought his way up to 7th and was pushing hard to try and gain some more spots. Unfortunately, on the last lap, Lima was forced to defend his position from Will Palmer, who had caught up after being overtaken earlier, and Gustavo spun his car after a small error, causing Palmer to try and avoid him but they collided with each other taking both of them out of the race.

Lima will be defending his 10th place position in the BRDC F4 Championship at the penultimate race weekend of the season at Donington Park on the 20th-21st September 2014.
