Battle At Brands Moves Kaminsky To Third In Championship

The penultimate round of the 2014 Cooper Tires British F3 Championship took place this weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent and after a consistent trio of races behind the wheel, Kaminsky goes into the final round third in the driver standings.

Kaminsky was looking forward to returning to the fast-flowing 2.4 mile GP circuit as he had done well in past Formula Ford races. Camren was joined by Thruxton team-mate, Max Marshall, and F3 rookie Dan Wells. Qualifying took place Saturday afternoon in dry conditions and Kaminsky was doing well but went off at turn 7 in the final five minutes of the session which meant he had to settle for his last complete lap time of 1.20.274, placing him P6 for Race 1 and P5 for Race 3.

Race 1 was a fairly uneventful opener to the weekend and Fortec Motorsport’s Santino Ferrucci led from start to finish in order to take his debut victory with the team. Kaminsky did drop to 7th but with eight minutes remaining, managed to pass Carlin Motorsport’s Li Zhi Cong to finish in 6th. Team-mate Marshall finished just ahead with Wells taking the final spot on the podium.

Camren said of Race 1: “The start wasn’t the best, I had a lot of wheelspin and I dropped back to seventh, and I got blocked up a couple of times by my team-mates. My pace at the beginning of the race wasn’t as good. I think my crash earlier in qualifying affected my rhythm, so the first half of the race was about getting back in the groove. Halfway through the race I caught up to Li, and passed him. I was almost catching Max, I think one more lap and I would have had him. I’m looking forward to tomorrow with the target to get a good start and some good points. I just need to focus on the start really, and stay with the group, get that pace immediately; that’s the key to getting on the podium.”

Grid line-up for Race 2 on Sunday morning was determined by the results of Race 1 with the top four drivers in reverse formation meaning Kaminsky maintained his 6th place start on the third row of the grid. Matt Rao started from pole but was quickly passed by team-mate Hong Wei Cao who promptly extended his gap and posted a succession of fastest lap times before going on to win the race. Kaminsky drove a solid race and crossed the line in 5th place.

The sun continued to shine for the third and final race of the weekend Sunday afternoon and a faultless drive by Ferrucci saw him jump his Fortec team-mate at the lights and stay out front for the duration of the race. Kaminsky recorded another 5th place finish and his consistent point scoring over the weekend moves him up to third in the driver championship with only one race remaining.

“My race was ok although it wasn’t my best start.” said Kaminsky; “I’m struggling for starts here, and have the whole weekend. At other weekends I’m usually pretty good. But today I fell back to sixth place, and then it was catching Dan. At times I was over excited and made a few mistakes, which dropped back my pace. Then towards the end of the race I started catching up, putting in some good consistent laps in.”

The final round of the British Formula 3 Championship will take place at Donington Park on the 13th-14th September.
