2014 NHRA: Spencer Massey NHRA U.S. Nationals Event Recap: First Round

Adversity is one of many things drivers can face in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series face throughout their career, but Don Schumacher Racing driver Spencer Massey is in the middle of one of the most difficult stretches of his Top Fuel career.

After qualifying No. 12 for the quickest Top Fuel field in NHRA history, Spencer and the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher team were pitted against reigning NHRA world champion Shawn Langdon in the opening round of the prestigious 60th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals near Indianapolis.

Spencer's Battery Extender dragster went into early tire smoke and Langdon posted a 3.787-second lap at 323 mph for the opening round win.

"This is disappointing," Spencer said. "We thought we had some good data but we knew that we needed to lay down a good number to get by them and the track just didn't hold it. We didn't have lane choice and weren't in the preferred lane and we just couldn't get off the starting line."

It was Spencer's sixth first-round loss of the season and all have come in the last 10 races.

"We're just kind of stuck right now and can't get out of the first couple of rounds. It's unfortunate because we are a better team than what's showing on paper. We've won two races this season and we know we will win more.

"We just need to regroup and get after it in the next six races for the Countdown."

The Battery Extender team will start the six-race Countdown to the Championship playoff in two weeks near Charlotte on Sept. 12 ranked sixth and trailer points-leader Doug Kalitta by 70 points.

"We're going to Charlotte next and that's been a good track for me in the past. Maybe that's where we will get off on the right foot and go after that world championship."
