2014 NHRA: Arana Sr Leaves Indy Ready For The Countdown To The Championship

While Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana Sr. wanted to add his name to the list of repeat Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals winners, he came up just shy in round one of final eliminations.

When the light on the Christmas Tree dropped, the Lucas Oil Buell rider didn't get the reaction time he is typically used to. With a .110 light compared to Angie Smith's .029, Arana had to try his best to play catch-up in the first round of eliminations. Unfortunately, his pass of 6.995 seconds just wasn't enough for Smith's 6.970.

"I wasn't nervous," Arana said. "I wasn't even thinking. I felt comfortable on what I was going to run but I dropped the clutch and there was a hesitation. There was nothing at all and then the bike took off. It was out of control, and I knew right there and then I had to figure out the problem. I'm trying to diagnose what just happened, 'Why this hesitation?' Bike-wise, I knew it was spinning. All you can do is try to run the best you can to the shift point and see if you can catch up.

"I'm trying to narrow down what it could be. What makes it worse, no data was recorded from the run. I definitely needed that data to compare what the computer recorded to what I felt and saw. Nothing I can do about it now but work on it from experience."

While he is anxious about getting back to victory lane, Arana is more concerned about chasing another Pro Stock Motorcycle championship. Sitting fourth in the standings heading into the event in Charlotte, N.C., Arana will set his sights on earning as many points as he possibly can at each race.

"I'm going to go back to the shop and get ready for another race," Arana said. "This loss right now doesn't mean anything. It would have been great to win here or keep going rounds, but I just have to focus now on the next race in Charlotte and earning points in the Countdown to the Championship. That's the game plan."

Not losing hope, Arana has already turned his focus to preparing for the Countdown to the Championship, which kicks off Sept. 12-14 in Charlotte.
