2014 NHRA: Indianapolis Leaves Arana Jr Prepped For Countdown To The Championship

Rebounding nicely from his last race in Sonoma, Calif., Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana Jr. raced his way to a semifinal appearance at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.

The Lucas Oil Buell rider looked stout in the first round, besting Scotty Pollacheck's pass of 6.951 seconds with a 6.896 to be the only Arana Racing member to move on to the second round.

Arana then pulled out a photo-finish win in the second round, defeating Jim Underdahl by only .002-second.

"Well it started last night really," Arana said. "Once we had everything packed up for the night, we stayed up looking at all the graphs and past notes trying to really get a grasp of what was going on this weekend as far as our clutch tune-up.

"It seemed to work when the day started. We came right out in the first round where I ran my best e.t. and had a great 60-foot time.

Cutting a deadly .018 reaction time in the semifinals against Eddie Krawiec, Arana tried to cling to his slight advantage but was just edged out at the finish line in the end.

"We just had an engine issue," Arana said. "We knew we did going into eliminations this morning; we just crossed our fingers hoping that it would be able to hang on for four rounds. Unfortunately, it didn't make it.

"The last round I had a killer light and everything was going great, but the engine finally started to go sour on us. I stayed with the run hoping that I could stay in front of him but it just wasn't enough.

"It's fine, though. We'll go back to the shop, take everything apart, diagnose what happened, and get everything back together for the start of the Countdown."

Arana will look to start his hunt for a championship on the right foot when he heads to the next stop on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 12-14.
