2014 NHRA: Goodyear, NHRA Sportsmen

Most drag racers dream of it. Joe Santangelo has done it.

The Marlborough, Connecticut driver beat Rick Brown in the final round to win Competition Eliminator at the Chevrolet Performance US Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis.

“Unbelievable,” Santangelo said. “I can’t believe it happened.”

Santangelo was one of four drivers to race to victory in the National Hot Rod Association’s biggest race. The others included Richie Crampton in Top Fuel, Alexis DeJoria in Funny Car and Shane Gray in Pro Stock.

Driving a 1934 Chevrolet roadster, Santangelo won by the slightest of margins, .0062 of a second, in the final round. He gave his Goodyear tires a healthy share of the credit for winning the race. Santangelo’s car had a pair of D2051 Eagles on the rear axle.

The D2051 measures 32.5 inches tall and is 17 inches wide. It mounts on a 15inch rim and the construction includes Goodyear’s D4A tread compound. It is designed to have a stiff sidewall.

The roadster generates 900 horsepower, weighs 2,040 pounds and reaches 170 mph during a quarter-mile pass.

“The Goodyear tires hooked up every run. You couldn’t ask any more of a tire,” the winner said. “They do everything you ask, they always hook up. They just won the US Nationals. What else can I ask?”

The victory was Santangelo’s first and it came the first time he competed on Goodyear tires.

“In Comp Eliminator, I’d say Goodyear tires are the tires to have, no question about it,” said Santangelo.

Goodyear employs about 69,000 people at manufacturing plants and facilities in 22 nations. Based in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear is among the largest tiremakers in the world and is the worldwide leader in race tire innovation.
