Carter Williams Gunning For Top-Three In SKUSA Prokart At Lake Elsinore

Carter Williams of Clovis, Calif., believes he has a realistic opportunity for a top-three finish in S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto Saturday in the SuperKarts! USA California ProKart Challenge at Lake Elsinore Diamond Stadium.

The 16-year old rookie in the senior-level shifter class has been close to the podium in the previous three California PKC features, a pair of fourth places and a fifth.

“To get on the podium in the next couple of races would be a big accomplishment,” Williams said. “It’s my goal. We’ve gotten much better over this year. It hasn’t been a big jump at one time and we’ve gotten down to within three-tenths (of a second per lap) off the fastest guys from a second and a half. I’m excited about this race.”

Williams, winner of the prestigious 2013 Lancaster (Calif.) Grand Prix/SuperKarts! USA Scholarship, hasn’t raced since finishing eighth in the SKUSA Pro Tour feature on Aug. 3, a national event held on a street course in downtown Modesto, Calif. Williams was 17th in the feature of the two-round event the previous day.

“We made up a lot of ground from the SpringNationals (held in Dallas on May 3-4),” Williams said. “We started pretty far back at Modesto and made up a lot of ground over the course of the weekend.”

Williams, who drives for Anaheim, Calif.-based Phil Giebler Racing, has been testing at Buttonwillow, Calif., in the past month.

“We’ve been testing a lot, every weekend since the SummerNats (Modesto), and we’ve figured a lot of things out and understood it more,” Williams said. “This (Lake Elsinore) will be a good race for us. It’s little things that make you faster. We’ve been trying to brake deeper into the corners. We’ve been approaching the corners differently. Our problem has been getting on the gas too early in the corner. We need to carry more speed out of the corner.”

The Lake Elsinore track will be a temporary circuit in the parking lot and designed identically to the SKUSA Pro Tour SuperNationals at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., to be held from Nov. 19-23.

“It’s obviously a great opportunity to prepare for the SuperNationals,” Williams said.

The Lake Elsinore event is the fifth of six in the California PKC. It begins Friday with practice from 9 a. m. to 5 p.m. Saturday has practice scheduled to start at 7 a.m., qualifying at 10:25 a.m., two heats starting at 11:40 a.m. and the features beginning at 3 p.m.

The SKUSA California PKC finale is the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix on Sept. 27-28.
