Leader Of The Pack

We took a few minutes out with GP3 Series points leader Alex Lynn ahead of this weekend’s round at the historic Monza circuit in Italy. Lynn tells us what his Spa victory meant and how he feels he achieves his best results under pressure……

After winning race two at Spa two weeks ago, you said on the podium that you needed that win. Was it an important victory for you?
Yes, most definitely. It had been a few weeks since I’d won and the weather conditions that weekend were pretty tricky. So when I found myself on reverse pole I knew I needed to capitalise on it and get some good points on the board.

You’ve led the standings from the start of the season does that add pressure on you to win the championship?
No in fact it’s the opposite. I’ve always enjoyed that; it sounds like an obvious thing to say but I don’t like not being in the lead. I prefer to start at the front - you’ve got more options around you. If you’re behind the only option you have is to win. Obviously the aim is to win every time anyway, but you can be more rational when you lead at the front.

You’re also a GP3 rookie so what has been the most challenging aspect of GP3 for you this season?
I think probably getting used to the tyres and the restricted number of sets we have through the weekend, together with quite a short amount of track time. You have to be on the ball pretty quick otherwise you could easily lose a weekend. I think both myself and the team have done a good job in getting round both those aspects; we prepare really hard for the race. We maximise everything we do before we get on the track which I think has been key to our success so far.

You’ve shown consistent pace in qualifying, qualifying at five of the six races so far in the top four. Do you consider that your strength?
Yeah, I think nine times out of the ten I perform better when it matters, when the pressure is on as it is during qualifying. I feel like I rise to the occasion a bit.

What are your thoughts on the remaining tracks of Monza, Sochi and Yas Marina?
Monza is great, it’s probably right up there with Spa as one of the best circuits on the calendar. No one has been to Sochi before so that’s going to be a new experience, although I have driven it on the simulator at Red Bull which was useful. I’ve never been to Abu Dhabi before either so that will be a new experience for me. It just means we have to do our homework and I need to do as much research as possible so we turn up in the best situation.

With three events left, who do you consider you biggest championship rivals?
I only ever focus on the guy that’s directly behind me. If the guy in second changes then they become my main concern. Generally though I’m just focusing on my own weekend.
