Geico Honda 250 Racers Have Reason For Optimism In Washougal

The GEICO Honda 250cc team could be on the verge of great things in the Pro Motocross series. Heading into the Washougal National on Saturday at Washougal MX Park, the four young riders all have reason for optimism.

Rookie R.J. Hampshire has shown plenty of speed in his first full outdoor season as a professional as he learns to develop consistency. He had a fifth in the first moto last weekend in Spring Creek, and if he can duplicate that in both races in Washougal, Hampshire could move closer to an overall podium finish.

"I feel like my speed's getting better each weekend and we're improving, so that's a good thing," Hampshire said. "I'm excited for Washougal. It's another new place for me, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to go home and put some work in this week and come back and hopefully put two good motos together."

Fellow rookie Jordon Smith moved into the top 10 in the 250 points standings after a seventh-place overall finish in Spring Creek, where he had his second top-five moto finish of the season. He has seven top-10 moto finishes in 2015, but only once has he done so in the same event. Like Hampshire, if Smith can learn consistency, he could be a dangerous rider.

"I'm ready for Washougal," Smith said. "I've never been there, but I've heard it's a little bit different track. I heard there are a bunch of shadows and stuff, so it should be challenging. It should be fun at the same time, so I'm ready for it."

Matt Bisceglia, too, is ready for Washougal. He's a native of Tualatin, Ore., less than an hour from Washougal MX Park. He's had many laps around the Washougal track and hopes to improve on his four top-10 overall finishes in 2015.

"I'm excited for Washougal," Bisceglia said. "That's my home race. I live just outside of Portland, Ore., and I grew up there the first 10 years of my life. I'm excited to go there and see what I can do. I have a bunch of friends and family and I grew up racing that track. It's going to be a good, fun race."

Christian Craig hopes so, too. He's ready to bounce back from a disappointing Spring Creek race, where he had two DNFs because he banged up his shoulder early in the first moto there.

"I have bigger things to worry about, and that's winning a championship next year for this team," Craig said. "I'm still learning, so I'll go back home, heal up, and be ready for Washougal. I'm looking forward to this weekend and getting some redemption, for sure."

Craig had a podium finish in RedBud and has had four top-eight overall finishes in his six races since joining the team as a replacement for the injured Justin Bogle, but Craig has signed on to race full time with GEICO Honda for the rest of 2015 and next season.
